Porn Responsible For 25% of Mobile Malware

Sex sells, obviously. When it comes to advertisements, then sex is the #1 seller – Be it engine oil or refined oil.

But when it comes to cybersecurity, then hackers are now using sex to infect mobile phones with deadly viruses, and it seems that they have been immensely successful in this mission as well.

Porn Responsible For 25% Of All Malware On Mobiles!

Kaspersky Labs has released their report titled “Naked online: cyber threats facing users of adult websites and applications”, and based on the findings, porn has triggered 25.4% of all malware attacks in mobile phones.

For this massive jump in malware attacks, and the amazing success rate of such attacks, Kaspersky has attributed to two facts:

  • People’s whose mobile phones are infected by malware from porn are sceptical to report the issue, hence detection becomes an issue.
  • More and more people are now consuming porn via their mobile phones, and hackers are now exploiting this ‘human’ vulnerability.

Roman Unuchek, a security expert at Kaspersky, said,

“A victim who has been compromised with an adult content-enabled malicious program might think twice before reporting the incident, simply because the very fact that they were trying to find porn content is viewed critically,”, adding, “Therefore, from the attacker’s perspective, such a person is a much more convenient victim.”

As per the Kaspersky report, there around 5 million malware attacks on phones in 2017, and 25.4% or roughly 11 lakh were due to porn access.

Which Types of Porn Related Attacks Were Prominent?

Kaspersky has found at least 23 families of malware, which used porn as a medium to propagate their deadly viruses and compromise millions of mobiles.

Porn apps acted as the #1 platform for spreading malware.

As soon as the user downloads such malware infected porn app, the virus starts clicking on Ads or secretly subscribe the user to WAP-related sites.

Second most prominent malware were Banking Trojans, which are disguised as porn video players. Rooting Malware and Ransomeware were the other widely infected malwares based on porn.

Scareware tactics are another very dangerous malware technique using porn. In this, the user is scared by sharing screenshots of porn videos accessed by the user and then demand ransome to remove them.

Kaspersky has suggested porn lovers to avoid using hacked porn accounts to access content, or to download mysterious porn apps from unknown sources.
