Jio Phone's New Plan

After launching a set of revised Jio plans, Reliance Jio has now announced an all-new low-cost plan as a part of a special Republic Day offer, exclusively for Jio Phone users. The new telecom operator has announced a new Rs. 49/- plan for the Jio Phone which will now offer free unlimited voice calls to all networks and 1GB high-speed data with a validity of 28 days.

Besides the Rs. 49/- plan, Jio has also introduced some affordable data add-on packs at Rs. 11, Rs. 21, Rs. 51 and Rs. 101.

The Jio 4G feature phone was launched last year with add-on entertainment services like JioMusic, JioTV and JioCinema. Jio recently updated their regular plans to offer 500MB more data on all their plans which offered 1GB and 1.5GB data per day.

Jio Phone – No. 1 Feature Phone In India

The Jio Phone has topped the list of feature phone shipments and has recently gained the maximum market in the country in the fourth quarter of 2017.

The Jio phone helped the company to dominate the feature phone market with a whopping 26% share. Reliance Jio has surpassed Samsung and Micromax in the total number of feature phone shipments, who now stand at second and third positions with 15% and 9% market share in Q4 2017 respectively.

Currently, the Jio Phone has a limited number of apps from their own company, through several rumours have claimed that soon Jio Phone will support Facebook and WhatsApp. Jio had also announced that the device will support a cable TV connector, which has not yet launched.

Jio Phone & The Competition

The 4G VoLTE Jio Phone took the feature market by storm and has disrupted the feature phones market with their “free” model. The feature phone, with an effective price of Rs. 0/- was made available to all. Users need to deposit Rs. 1,500/- which is the refunded back after 36 months.

Competing against Jio, several other operators including Airtel, BSNL and Vodafone brought their affordable 4G enabled entry-level smartphones to the Indian market.

Jio Phone’s New Plan

Reliance Jio originally had a Rs. 153/- plan for Jio Phone users which was later reduced to Rs. 149/-. The plan was recently revised to offer 1GB data per day, compared to 500MB previously. It comes with a validity of 28 days with unlimited calling to all networks.

Jio Phone also has two smaller sachet packs. The first one costs Rs. 24/- and is valid for 2 days. The other one costs Rs. 54/- and is valid for 7 days, with 500MB internet per day and unlimited calling.

Jio’s closest rivals are Airtel and  Vodafone, which now offer data at a cost of around Rs. 4 per GB, which has further dropped in Airtel’s new plans.

Jio’s current tariff of Rs. 2.7 per GB of data is about 99% lower when compared to Rs. 249-259 per GB charged by operators till August 2016, before the commercial launch of Jio services.

Besides the Rs. 49 plan, the telco has also announced a separate ‘Republic Day offer’, which will double the validity of Rs. 98 pack to 28 days from the previous 14 days.
