Hyderabad, 1st City to Get 1Gbps Broadband COnnectivity

ACT Fibernet, which claims to be the largest non-telco internet service provider (ISP) which usesĀ fiber optic technology in India, has launched 1 Gbps broadband speed in Hyderabad.

This means that Hyderabad has become the first Indian city to get such high-speed Internet, as no other Indian city can claim this distinction.

Revealing their future plans, ACT Fibernet has said that 10 more Indian cities will soon get this high speed, but hasnā€™t revealed which cities would be those.

Bala Malladi, CEO, ACT Fibernet said, ā€œWith our citizens and the government moving towards the Digital India movement, high-speed internet is the need of the hour. With the launch of our 1 Gbps broadband internet service, it gives me immense pride to turn this dream into reality,”

Skillfully linking their high-speed offering with Digital India, Fibernet has said their 1 Gbps broadband will help to connect all 23 million Telangana citizens with broadband, by 2018.

Charges For 1 Gbps Broadband

ACT Fibernet is offering this mind-blowing speed of 1 Gbps at a monthly rental of Rs 5,999 per month. And, 1 TB of data usage has been set as FUP per month.

Considering that ACT Fibernet, which commands 65% market share in Hyderabad and Secunderabad, is the only ISP offering such high speed, users wonā€™t be getting any option to choose from.

For a user who is consuming 1 TB of data, the charges are reasonable, as he will pay only Rs 5.9 per GB. However, if the usage is not that high, then the plan is a bit expensive.

However, having said that, the introduction of such high-speed Internet is indeed a great step for India.

Why Is This Development Crucial For India?

As per TRAIā€™s own report, a speed of 2.5 Mbps is the average broadband speed in India. Although I, as a regular user of Internet, have hardly received such speed while accessing the Internet from Tier 2/3 cities, but for argumentā€™s sake, this is the reality.

Now, ACT Fibernetā€™s 1 Gbps offering in Hyderabad is 400 times of this national average, which is indeed a great thing to happen for Hyderabad citizens.

Not only this high-speed offering will increase the average speed of all broadband users in India (at least theoretically), but also raise the standards, so that other ISPs, especially BSNL and MTNL takes notice, and improve their quality of speed as well.

Hence, it is indeed a win-win situation for every Indian internet user.
