Mobile Wireline call tariffs

A few days back, the top telecom operators in India announced unlimited voice calling and data combo prepaid plans to take on the lucrative tariff plans of Reliance Jio. Now Airtel and Idea have come up unlimited voice and data combo plans for postpaid users as well.

Airtel To Launch 2 New Infinity Packs

Airtel is planning to introduce two new Infinity packs for its Postpaid subscribers at Rs. 549, and at Rs. 799.

Both these packs would be valid for one month and offer unlimited SMS (restricted to 100 SMS/day as per TRAI mandate), unlimited voice calling to any number in the country, and free incoming during roaming (for an additional Rs. 99). The users will also get full and free subscription to Wynk Music and Wynk Movies.

The only difference between these packs is the free data benefits.

Rs. 549 pack would offer 2 GB data (only to 4G smartphone users) or 1 GB data to non-4G phone users.

Rs. 799 plan users would get all the above mentioned benefits with the increased free data limit of 4 GB (for 4G users) and 2 GB for non-4G users.

Plan Voice Calling / Roaming SMS Data Extras
Rs. 549 Unlimited, Free incoming on Roaming Unlimited 2GB for 4G users and 1GB for non-4GB users Free Subscription on Wynk Music & Wynk Movies
Rs. 799 Unlimited, Free incoming on Roaming Unlimited 4GB for 4G users and 2GB for non-4GB users Free Subscription on Wynk Music & Wynk Movies

Idea Launches 2 New Ultimate Combo Plans

Idea Cellular has also launched two new ‘Ultimate Combo Plans’ for its postpaid users. These new Ultimate Combo plans would be available pan-Indian soon and are priced at Rs. 1,199 and Rs. 1,599. These plans offer unlimited voice calls to any number in India.

Now, similar to the above mentioned Airtel Infinity plans these plans also offer unlimited Local/National SMS (100 SMS/day), while offering data benefits.

Rs. 1,199 tariff plan would offer subscribers 4 GB data (for 4G phone users), or 1 GB data for non-4G users. On the other hand, Rs. 1,599 plan offers 5 GB internet to 4G smartphone users while offering 5 GB data to non-4G users as well.

Plan Voice Calling / Roaming SMS Data Extras
Rs. 1199 Unlimited, Free incoming on Roaming Unlimited 4GB for 4G users and 1GB for non-4GB users N/A
Rs. 1599 Unlimited, Free incoming on Roaming Unlimited 5GB for 4G users and 5GB for non-4GB users N/A

Are Prepaid Tariff Plans Much Better?

Talking about the costs and the benefits, Airtel and Idea had earlier launched prepaid unlimited voice calling and data combo packs priced at Rs. 350 approximately. These prepaid plans offer unlimited voice calling to any network in the country, and 1 GB data (for 4G users) or 50 MB data for non-4G users.

So, if you main medium of communication is voice, then you should opt for these prepaid plans, but if you are netizen then these postpaid plans might make sense to you.

However, before you make any decision please note that Reliance Jio is offering way more benefits than the incumbent telecom operators. Besides offering unlimited calling even while roaming, Jio is offering unlimited SMS too. Jio’s Rs. 499 plan offers 4 GB 4G data with unlimited night usage, 8 GB Wi-Fi data, and has a validity of 28 days. This plan beats all the plans offered by the incumbents hands down.

Well, the game is not over yet for the incumbents yet. In fact, it has just started. The telcos would first see the reaction of the public to their newly launched plans and then revise their offerings accordingly. In the meantime, Jio has bought itself another 90 days for sorting all its network related issues.

Can Airtel retain its #1 position, or will lose it to Reliance Jio? No one knows! Let’s wait and watch.
