Around 12.5 crore Indians have a Facebook account, out of which, 6.9 crore use it daily, for atleast 15 minutes.

When such a large proportion of Internet population is active on a social media portal, it says a lot about the massiveness of the platform, and the possibilities it can generate. When we realize what Facebook users are thinking and sharing, then we realize what India is thinking and sharing.

Facebook has just shared their ‘Year in Review’ report for 2016, and here are the major updates from India:

Most Talked About Topics: Diwali, Cricket & Surgical Strikes

Diwali was declared as the most talked about topic in India, as Facebook users shared Diwali greetings and wishes all across their timelines. Cricket was at #2 rank.

However, Uri Attacks and Surgical Strikes jumped ahead to #3 position as terrorism attacked angered and hurt Indians all over Facebook. Pathankot attack was also talked about a lot, as it was ranked #8.

Interestingly, at #4, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (movie) hogged the limelight in sporting activities, as it conveniently defeated Rio Olympics which was ranked 7. This was not seen on Twitter’s Year end review, where #Rio2016 was positioned way up compared to other sports or movie related topics.

Among non-Indian topics, iPhone 7 launch and Pokeman Go was talked about a lot by Indian Facebook users. They are ranked #10 and #8 respectively.

Most Viewed Live Facebook Videos

Live video of a South Indian Muslim teacher teaching English in an innovative way was watched by 9.2 million viewers (since October 13, 2016), thereby becoming the most watched Facebook Live Video in India.

Besides this, 80% of the top 10 live Facebook videos belonged to the Bollywood niche, as live videos by Sonakshi Sinha, Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Ajay Devgan, Kajol were watched millions of times.

Among news, 2 live videos by Aajtak were watched most number of times, whereas one video by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal clocked 4.4 million views, thereby getting a slot in the top 10 ranking. In this video, he criticizes PM Modi over demonetization.
