There is both good news and bad news for Internet community in India.

The good news is that, Railtel-Google’s free WiFi program at major Railway Stations across India is a massive hit, as we had reported earlier. Patna railway station has, in fact, topped the list as maximum free WiFi was consumed there.

Now, the bad news: At Patna railway station, porn is the #1 search category used by passengers, which means that precious data was wasted by users to surf porn websites.

The question is arises is: Is free WiFi being misused by passengers in Patna?

Patna Passengers Love Free WiFi

In June this year, we had reported the rising popularity of free WiFi program, which was started by Railtel in association with Google Fiber to enable wider Internet access. At that time, Railtel informed us that 15 lakh passengers are enjoying free WiFi across 19 railway stations in India.

Now, more details are emerging regarding the pattern of usage across these railway stations, and the what exactly is being surfed online.

As per latest report, Patna’s railways station recorded maximum usage of free wifi, compared to anywhere in India. Jaipur is at #2 position, followed by Bengaluru at #3 and Delhi at #4 position.

With more than 200 trains passing via Patna at any given day, it is indeed a busy railway station, with lakhs of passengers passing through it daily. Patna was also the first railway station from Bihar to get free WiFi facility.

Earlier, world’s longest corridor of free wifi was launched in Patna as well.

But Porn Is The Biggest Usage Of Free WiFi?

While analysing the statistics and details related with usage behavior, Railtel discovered that porn consumes maximum bandwidth when it comes to free WiFi usage by passengers in Patna.

An official said, “More than anything, porn sites have been watched and downloaded by the people at Patna railway station.”

Youtube and Wikipedia also figures in the top list of websites/apps used at Patna railway station, but porn beats them all. Downloading of Bollywood and Hollywood movies have also been mentioned by Railtel.

In January this year, Mumbai become the first railway station to get free WiFi under Railtel-Google Fiber project, and plans are on to expand the coverage of this program to 400 railway stations across India.

Undeterred and non judgmental regarding porn usage, Railtel official said, “By this year-end, free Wi-Fi facility will be launched at 100 major railway stations. We will achieve our target of 400 stations in three years. Once in place, it will be the largest public Wi-Fi system in the world..”

Even if Railtel can’t comment publically on massive wastage of bandwidth on porn, it is something passengers and users of the facility need to understand and comprehend. Accessing porn, which consumes large chunks of data, on a free Govt. sponsored wifi coverage is an abuse of the privilege, and should be condemned.
