I think you all will agree that Bluetooth is an irreplaceable technology in our lives and has been going very strong since 2000, the first time it was introduced in a mobile phone. Ever since version 4.0 was launched in 2009, large companies adopted and upgraded their hardware to support the brilliant wireless technology.

The last update, Bluetooth v4.2 that came out in 2014, added features for IP connectivity, connecting IoT devices, privacy and speed. Now, the company is planning to launch the next major upgrade, Bluetooth v5.0, that will offer double the speed and four times the range between devices.

This comes at the advent of IoT, where devices are interconnected through the low-energy consuming technology, and require communication from longer distances and with higher speeds. This means that data can be transmitted between two devices as far as 350 meters.

The speed has also become twice and Bluetooth makers claim that it can send 800% more data at once. This could possibly mean more compression but quicker information transfer, without any increase in energy consumption.

Bluetooth 5.0 is expected to be ready by 2017 and we could see companies adopting the technology by the latter half of 2017.

“Increasing operation range will enable connections to IoT devices that extend far beyond the walls of a typical home, while increasing speed supports faster data transfers and software updates for devices. And now with the ability to broadcast a much richer set of information, Bluetooth 5 will make beacons, location awareness, and other connectionless services an even more relevant part of an effortless and seamless IoT experience,” said Mark Powell, Executive Director at Bluetooth SIG.

Is this upgrade worth it?

This will be the first major upgrade in 9 years and it better be worth it! Not only will it allow you to connect to other devices from longer distances, but also communicate faster and more efficiently.

As Mark Powell said, Bluetooth will improve the Internet of Things industry, providing you the ability to update your location instantly and accurately with v5.0, connect to beacons and smart devices around.

There are so many possibilities – say for example the music you were listening to in your bedroom moves to other rooms as you move, your smart television switches on as soon as you enter the leisure room and your security camera switches on as soon as you leave home.

Over 30,000 companies are a part of Bluetooth SIG(Special Interest Group) that will employ the service in their products next year onwards. This will mark an important event in the history of Bluetooth and open many doors to innumerable possibilities of communication.
