Bharti Airtel to Invest Rs. 60,000 Crores Over the Next 3 years to Improve its Mobile Services

Bharti Airtel is the largest mobile operator in India and also the first to launch its its 4G services in the country. However, things have not gone exactly as planned and many subscribers have complained of poor coverage and inefficient speeds since they launched couple of months back.

Moreover, 4G services are still quite expensive to everyone, but the rich, which trickles down to more noise from the common man. Even though TRAI is trying hard to reduce the user woes, their efforts are going largely unnoticed. We still come across frequent call drops and slow internet connection problems.

Looking at all the problems in India, Bharti Airtel has announced their intention to invest Rs. 60,000 to improve its quality of network and enhance customer experience. Dubbed as ‘Project Leap’, Airtel plans to completely transform the current processes in India and bring about a good change in the industry.

The news comes at a very good time when Airtel has been facing criticism from its users for regular call drops and there is an opportunity of mobile number portability as well. It all boils down to existing customer management and careful acquisition of new subscribers.

Gopal Vittal, MD and CEO, Bharti Airtel talked about the project and commented, “We are confident that “Project Leap” will help Airtel build a smart and dynamic network that will significantly improve the quality of both voice and data services across the length and breadth of the country. More importantly we are excited to share the “Project Leap” plan with each of our customers in their specific locality. This we believe will help us serve our customers with transparency and clarity.”

According to reports, ‘Project leap’ will deploy about 70,000 base stations in the current fiscal, while around 1,60,000 base stations will be put up across the country over the next three years.

Airtel has already invested Rs. 1,60,000 crore active and passive network, high speed fiber cables, submarine cables and systems till date.

Having personally used Airtel services, I can confirm that there are issues with call drops and network in Delhi NCR, however even then their network is one of the best in the country.

With regulations from TRAI and this move from Airtel itself, we can hope to see better infrastructure and enhanced services for everyone in the country.

I only hope other mobile operators follow similar steps and offer world class telecom services.
