Made In India Operating System BOSS May Soon Replace Microsoft Windows At All Govt Offices
When it comes to Make in India mission, then why only manufacturing and services? Indian Government wants to use Make in India operating systems as well.
In a new development, it has been revealed that Indian Govt. may replace Microsoft Windows Operating System across all offices with their own, open source OS called Bharat Operating System Solutions (BOSS). For the last three months, vigorous testing was in progress, and the results are satisfactory. In fact, even Indian Army couldn’t break the code of BOSS.
This week, a high level meeting will be conducted by Union Home Ministry, and a higher, advanced version of BOSS would be unveiled. Announcements regarding replacing Windows OS can be taken during this meeting.
This goes perfectly in line with earlier Govt. order making it mandatory to use only open source software in Govt. offices.
About BOSS
Developed by National Resource Centre for Free/Open Source Software (NRCFOSS) of India at Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), Chennai, BOSS is an open source, Linux based OS. First launched in 2007, the current version of BOSS is 5.0., code named ‘Anokha’.
It can support 20 Indian languages, and has been developed keeping in mind various security and operational issues, which are especially relevant for Indian usage. Often described as ‘India’s own PC operating system’, BOSS has been endorsed by the Indian Govt. for adaption and implementation on a large scale.
Linux Foundation has already certified BOSS as per Linux Standard Base standard.
BOSS had been initially developed for desktop PC usage; it is not yet clear whether it will run on mobile devices as well.
But Why BOSS Now?
As per Edward Snowden’s leaked cables, India is one of the most watched, and scrutinized nations of the world; especially by US and China. We have observed how Chinese hackers are able to break into Indian Government’s servers easily, and steal crucial information.
By replacing Windows with BOSS, Indian Govt. can aim for greater protection and more security of its data.
Challenges with BOSS
BOSS was initially launched in 2007, but it saw poor adaption across Govt. offices and departments. In fact, last year when Orissa Primary Education Programme Authority required an OS for 15,000 computers across 3000 schools in the state, they chose Suse Linux OS, as BOSS proved to be ineffective for mass scale implementation.
However, the newest version which would be unveiled later this week, has been infused with new codes, and new functionalities, which seems promising. The newer version has been developed by DRDO, Gujarat Technical University and assistance of several private computer geeks has been taken.

If it uses Linux as base then how can it be termed as Made in India? Its not 100% made in India. Just the customised version of Linux.
Nothing new. Developing an OS on the top of Linux & then taking credibility? It’s there for long in the market. You see many versions of os on Linux platform. And of course you can push for BOSS just to make your slogan of make in india popular. Its kust an another opportunity to make money.

Apart from everything which is fantastic why would we be giving compliments to the govt under Modi for this where it is clear that we i.e CDAC and bunch of other had accomplished this mission. And to be clear‚ this project was initiated way before Modi ji came over the power. So if you want to appreciate then appreciate the deserving one not the other way around.

Yes FYI I have gone through the statement before carefully. In fact I am from CDAC. What I am saying is the project BOSS was initialised before by the former so that we would be able to use it for our own purpose and We were trying for a long time to get it done for the stable version. So there is nothing new to complement other specially except emphasing on those who made it possible. !!!
I don’t believe open source software is secure. With open source every one will have access to source code. A bug can be easily introduced into it.
These days hacks and Backdoor entry’s are at a different level rather than OS. They are from applications, routers, etc.
Most of current day hacks are from application vulnerabilities and not Related to operating systems
@ryan. India is going in for BOSS to eliminate strategically placed back-doors in the OS by the foreign governments. Not to eliminate issues arising out of applications.

Err .. get your freaking facts correct!! I’m a hacker noob .. and open source software is secure because it’s open source. If you ever hacked anything, you should know that hacking does never require your source to be open; like come on, you can understand that from the term itself. On the other hand, when the source is opened, such as on gitHub, then coders from round the would can contribute and fix bugs; unlike in M$ Windows where backdoors by NSA are a norm and at appl£, where after all drama, FBI guys could unlock the wipe-after-10-attempts iPhone .. meh!!!

Same can be done with windows but in linux case some company or white hat would find it remember eternal blue every system has some vulnerable but the fact is linux is more open so someone would find it and it will be easy to track the time from which it is there in system and by linux you mean KERNEL because linux is a kernel and the kernel owner is linus torvalds so he decides what goes in and not so no it cannot be done INFACT you could find ms windows source code in dark web(don’t ask me how do I find it) so your comments do not make sense Katydorjee another example is bsd the most secure open source system it has only witnessed 2 MAJOR ATTACKS till this day so no you are wrong
BOSS is not opensource software. It is developed on top of an opensource software – LINUX, which is proven by time as the most secure OS available.
