It seems Facebook is lot more than just cat images and relationship updates, which most of the non-Facebook users assume about World’s biggest social network. 864 million (86.4 crore) people use Facebook on a daily basis, with 82.2% of them outside US and Canada. If Facebook would have been a country, it would be ranked #3 biggest nation in the whole world.

Facebook is much larger than we normally think; it has become a huge family of engaged, connected users who share their pieces of lives with each other. If someone wishes to understand life, then Facebook would be the first book to read.

Facebook has shared the top stories and topics which dominated their platform for 2014, and here is a summary:

A) Most popular topics:

General elections which held in the month of April-May was the most popular story for Facebook users in India.

Posts about Indian Premier League (IPL) is at #2, thereby signaling that for 2014, Elections were more popular than Cricket for all Indians.

Football World cup ranked #3 meanwhile India’s maiden venture into Mars: MOM is at #4.

The devastating Kashmir Floods has been placed at #5.

Xiaomi, which has been banned by Government to import and sell their mobiles in India is surprisingly ranked at #6.

Alia Bhatt, daughter of Mahesh Bhatt who made her debut is the lone Bollywood celebrity in this list, as she is ranked #7.

Mary Kom, first women to win Gold at Asian Games also found a position as a popular Facebook topic, as she is ranked #8. Malaysian Airline’s unfortunate crash has been placed at #9 and Gaza Conflict has been ranked #10.

B) Most Popular Places

Facebook analyses the check-ins done by its users, to determine the most popular places within a country. For India, its India Gate, the iconic war memorial in New Delhi where maximum check-ins happened on Facebook. Statistically though, Qutab Minar is the most visited tourist location in Delhi, and surprisingly, it hasn’t found any place in the ranking.

Taj Mahal, Agra, where most of foreign tourists visit in India is at #2 rank, meanwhile Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in Delhi is ranked #3. Nandi Hills in Chikkaballapur, Karnataka is the surprise entry of the list, as its placed at #4 rank.

Marine Drive in Mumbai finds itself in #5, Marina Beach of Chennai is at #6 and Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad is at #7.

LuLu Mall, Kochi which is described as India’s largest shopping mall is at #8.

Hauz Khas village, another lesser known tourist attraction in Delhi is at #9 and Coorg, the Scotland of India, which is a beautiful and serene hill station in Karnataka is ranked #10.

If we observe the global trends of Facebook, then Football WorldCup, which happened in June-July was the most talked about event of the year. The deadly Ebola virus, which has been described as largest epidemic, has killed more than 6000 people in Western Africa, is at #2. The death of Robin Williams has been placed at #4 and Ice Bucket Challenge, which spread like wildfire few months back is ranked #5.
