Earlier… (the below list was based on rankings in 2008)

This is season of admissions for students passed out of SSC and HSC. Given that Internet has become a new medium for finding information about best colleges and Institutes in India, I thought I will publish this list for the benefit of students seeking admissions in top Indian Law colleges.

I am also planning to publish various different lists that will serve as a ready recknor for students looking to get admissions with top colleges in different streams.

This list has been compiled by different sources for 2008 and I am publishing it here for benefit of students. If you find ranking not appropriate or wrong, please leave your comment and I shall try to update and refine the list further.

Law is one of the most important streams and very different from regular science, commerce and Art colleges. In India corruption levels are very high among legal circles and due to these few corrupt lawyers, law as a stream is not looked upon in a very good light. Having said that following top Law colleges in INdia have produced some of the most well known lawyers in the world.

  6. Don't be idiots. says

Please do not consider this list while applying for law schools. This list has basically taken all the 14 CLAT-based NLUs and arranged them at the top while taking the AILET-based NLU (NLU Delhi) and dumped it at No. 15. That’s a ridiculous system of arrangement if you consider the fact that NLU Delhi is one of the fore-runners in job placements (with offers from AZB, Amarchand and foreign firms like Herbert Smith Freehills and Linklaters). Notably, it is usually hailed as one of the top 5 law schools in the country.

Additionally, this list is supposed to be a compilation of the preferences of those who seek admissions in law school. Regardless of the accuracy of the survey, taking into serious consideration the opinion of one who is not yet a law school student is quite absurd and frankly stupid while mapping out *your* law school dreams. Most of them do not have the complete picture of the standard of education in these universities! Please consult an ex or current student of the law school of your choice when deciding. Ignore those ridiculous India Today lists as well because quite a few top-class law schools opt out of those lists. It’s like creating a list of the best footballers with Messi and Pele saying they don’t want to be a part of it.

Be wise, future lawyers of the world.

kiit law school, the man who started ADR in this world, prof. Martin Hunter from Nottingham Unversity is associated with this law school. They have got a fantastic faculty group. So people who prepare top 20 list and all that stuffs, check it out and amend ur top lists. Best teachers for constitutional law: Prof. V D Sebastian , Dr. Faizan Mustafa… How can u miss such a law school from your list.. There students are quite good, i think… They interned under me here at Delhi. Not bad. their basics are very clear. Better check it out.. If u got a call from there, i think u should grab this opportunity.. Its a new law school but with a fantastic and different way of imparting legal education.

  69. Aamir says

Last 5-6 colleges stands nowhere near KIIT Law School. Who comes out with these ranks. U cant just put just any name u like…. KIIT Law School has been certified as an “A” grade by almost all of the legal luminaries u can name of in establishing law schools in India, for example: Prof. G.V. Ajappa is one of the faculties here, N.L. Mitra is one of the advisiors who regularly takes classes here, Dr. Faizan Mustafa presently VC of NLUO, Cuttack is the founding director of this law school. If u dont know abt all the law school properly then plz dont come out with thses kind of lists where there r names of 3-4 law schools about which people have neverheard off. Madhav Menon even praised this young law school on his visit here.

Anyone who with basic knowledge looks at this ranking chart would have a very good night sleep. Atleast i will. Nice to see that in this day and age of malpractices and trading ranks for money i found a website who does it only to provide entertainment to its readers/followers. thank you

  80. AR92 says

ur ranking system is completely wrong. the best law schools are ranked on the academic excellence of their faculty,
WBNUJS should be ranked at number two. the students have been excelling in evry field be it mooting, debating, placements etc
your ranking system is terrible. misleading students ESPECIALLY WHEN COUNSELLING IS BASED ONLY ON YOUR PREFERENCE LIST in CLAT.it will do more harm than good. as already pointed out cases are pending against OUTLOOK and India today for their absurd ranking system.
it will be great if u just take down this list or revise it as you will be seriously jeopardising many law aspirants futures if they go according to this ranking list.

  81. WRONG RANKINGS says

ure ranking is not accurate. u have missed out a lot of the national law schools which come foremost in legal education in India. such as NUJS and GNLU. Please update ure information so that students have a true picture.

  82. nujs? says

why is nujs not even there in the rankings ….never heard of it or what ..if you dont think nujs should be included then i doubt your competance to rank…
    thanks

  83. rajan says

which all tests should i give after my +2 level
so that i can apply in every good colledge of law
    exept CLAT

Thanks for the Rankings, I really needed this one…

  116. Sharique Hussain says

Being a student of law i know what should be the quantum on which the actual position of an institution can be judged. if colleges like NLS, jodhpur, Faculty of law, Aligarh muslim university, GNLU did’nt find its place in the list then we should get into the matter and seriously think about it.

  117. Jyoti says

Your ranking is as dubious as the India Today Ranking, if not more so. Instead of an armchair ranking, you would do well to speak to alumni of all the institutions ranked in your list and ask for an honest opinion of which institution he / she would have preferred if he / she had a choice. You could also examine the CLAT preference list to see what which institutions have been preferred by the top 500. Institutions such as Symbiosis and ILS have no transparent means of admission, haphazard classes and very, very poor placements – only a fraction of the graduating class get offers comparable to NLSIU, NALSAR or NUJS. Putting the former in the top 10 is a dishonour to all the NLUs and particularly the latter.

    1. SANYA PARMAR says

wonderful!!! i really like ur comment! u r absolutely right…being one of the students of nujs, i can say this very confidently that it is ne day better than colleges like ils and symbiosis….

  123. Ankita Sarkar says

I think its unfair to leave out NUJS, Jadavpur University, Kolkata from this list. Its cut off is higher than the National Law College in Bhopal. I hope NUJS finds a place in ur revised list!

    1. Aakash says

The National University of Juridical Science, Kolkata is not a part of Jadavpur University and is an independent university.

V.M. Salgaocar College of Law (VMSCL) Miramar Goa has been taking great strides in improving the quality of legal education and thus substantially enhancing the quality of law graduates who obtain a Law Degree from Goa University. The Education at the college is not limited to imparting of legal knowledge to the students on various legal subjects but includes a kind of legal training which could enable the students to develop the capacity for rational thinking, articulation, presentation of arguments and sensitivity to the social needs. VMSCL has one of the best libraries which any law college can possess. In fact VMSCL had the option of being one of the National Law Schools but considering the steep fees charged by the National Law Schools, the benovalent Salgaocars decided to retain its identity by maintaining a reasonable and affordable fees structure. In the times to come VMSCL will climb the charts in the ranking pages.
