The much awaited Google Zeitgeist for 2013 is here – The list of most popular trending people, topic and events of the year based on the searches made on Google’s search engine.

The 2013 Google Zeitgeist throws some new names and some that perpetually top the charts. Let us look at them in more details.

Contents

Most Searched Phrases

In total volume of searches the top 2 were for the usual suspects –  IRCTC and Cricinfo. However, the 3rd most searched word was Flipkart, which clearly goes to show that E-Commerce is no well and truly arrived in India. GOSF was another event that proved that fact. The 5th most searched phrase in India was “HDFC Netbanking”, which proved that HDFC is probably the most used bank when it comes to netbanking.

The most peculiar thing though about these searches for site urls in search rather than typing it directly in the search engine.  7 of the top 10 searches were the site names themselves!

Most Searched People / Bollywood Actors / Actresses

While Google has provided 3 different lists – we are merging all 3 because all of them contain Bollywood Actors. Interestingly, the most popular among them all is Sunny Leone, who topped the most popular people chart. Yeah, more people searched for Sunny Leone than Narendra Modi. This just goes to show that skin sells more than anything! And I am sure you know why they were all searching for Sunny Leone!

BTW, Google Zeitgeist does not treat Sunny as a Bollywood Actress!

Among Bollywood Actors, Salman Khan topped the charts, followed by SRK, Ranbir, Akshay and Hrithik. Among Actresses, Katrina was most popular followed by Deepika, Kareena, Priyanka, and Aishwarya!

Top Searched Politician

When it came to politicians, 2013 belonged to Narendra Modi, hardly any day went by without Narendra Modi being in the news. In Google Zeitgeist, he topped not one but 2 charts – for the most popular politician and for the news of him being the PM Candidate of BJP.

While Arvind Kejriwal was the 6th most searched politician in India, he would definitely have been in top 3 had the Delhi elections were held earlier in the year.

Top Movies

Interestingly, Chennai express which is the biggest Bollywood grosser till date did not come out on top – Aashiqui 2 beat the SRK starrer. Krrish 3, Dhoom 3 and Himmatwala completed the top 5 in movies.

Most Searched Phones

Samsung’s latest flagship phone, Samsung Galaxy s4 was the most searched phone by Indians, followed by Nokia’s cheapest Windows smartphone – Nokia Lumia 520. Homegrown Micromax Canvas 2 was third on the list followed by Galaxy Grand and Micromax Canvas

Most Searched Sportsperson

I don’t think there is any doubt as to who is the most searched sportsperson – It had to be Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar given that he retired from his glittering career. He was followed by Milkha Singh, probably the outcome of movie released in his name and then on 3rd position was Indian captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Ace Footballer Lionel Messi and Roger Federer completed the top 5 of the most popular sportsperson searched on Google by Indians.

Most Popular News Events

While we did our own version of Top 5 popular news events – Google Zeitgeist had others, except for Narendra Modi’s PM candidature, which topped the charts for news events of 2013. Blackberry Sale came in at second.

Interestingly, according to Google Rahul Dravid’s retirement was third most popular news event. I am really not sure if it was, but Google trends definitely suggests that!
