55 Indians on Forbes’ 2013 Billionaires List, Mukesh Ambani Leads

Mukesh Ambani maintained his spot as the wealthiest Indian in Forbes’ list of The World’s Billionaires. The 2013 list included 55 Indian billionaires, 7 more than last year. Carlos Slim Helu is the richest billionaire worldwide in 2013.

Indians in Forbes’ billionaire list

Mukesh Ambani’s wealth was estimated at $21.5 billion. The Chairman of Reliance Industries was ranked the 22nd wealthiest billionaire in the world and also the 37th most powerful person in the world. Forbes highlighted RIL and BP’s announcement to invest over $5 billion in the KG Basin, made in the third week of February 2013.

With a net worth of $16.5 billion, Lakshmi Mittal was the second richest Indian in the Forbes’ billionaire list and 41st worldwide.

The steel magnate’s wealth dropped by $4 billion in the last 12 months and $14.6 billion in the last 2 years due to a slump in demand for the metal. His son-in-law’s foray into the low cost aviation sector in India via a joint venture with Air Asia and the Tata Group was highlighted by Forbes.

Billionaire List

Chairman of Wipro Azim Premji was ranked 91st in Forbes’ billionaire list, making him the third richest Indian.

The 67 year old founder of India’s third largest IT company donated $2.3 billion to his education foundation over and above donating $2 billion in 2010. This made Azim Premji the fifth most generous person in the whole world, according to Forbes.

Dilip Shanghvi was ranked 4th richest in India and 116th in the world. The founder of Sun Pharmaceuticals came in the limelight in 2012 as the company’s shares doubled from the Rs. 400 level in late 2010 to an all time high of Rs. 825.80 recently, according to Moneycontrol. Forbes notes Sun Pharmaceuticals as India’s most valuable drug maker as per market capitalization.

Shashi and Ravi Ruia, founders of the Essar Group, were named the fifth richest Indians with a combined wealth of $8.5 billion. The brothers founded the Essar Group in 1969 which has evolved into a conglomerate operating in various sectors including steel, construction, oil, power, ports and logistics.

Chairman of Aditya Birla Group Kumar Mangalam Birla, steel baroness Savitri Jindal & Family of the O.P Jindal Group, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises Sunil Mittal, founder of HCL Technologies Shiv Nadar and real estate mogul Kushal Pal Singh of DLF were also among the top 10 Indian billionaires.

Forbes’ The World’s Billionaires

The 2013 Forbes’ billionaire list had a record 1,426 names with a combined net worth of $5.4 trillion. Telecom magnate and Chairman of America Movil, Carlos Slim Helu maintained his position as the world’s richest individual. His wealth is estimated by Forbes at $73 billion, more than three times that of India’s richest billionaire Mukesh Ambani.

Bill Gates was raked the second wealthiest person in the world with a net worth of $67 billion. According to Forbes, the co-founder of Microsoft has already given away $28 billion to charities and foundations.

Founder of Spanish fashion retailer Zara, Amancio Ortega was ranked third in the 2013 Forbes’ billionaire list with his net worth estimated at $57 billion. Ortega founded Zara in 1975. According to Forbes, his net worth increased by $19.5 billion in the last 12 months. CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Warren Buffet and co-founder of Oracle Larry Ellison were among the top 5 billionaires, worth $53.5 billion and $43 billion respectively.

    Till I saw the list I was worried all the time. I told them not to put my name on the list. Though they promised not to publish my name, I was not sure until I saw the final print. Now I am tension free :)
