So, finally we have the official word from Google. Today in a blog post published by Ibrahim Elbouchikhi, Product Manager on the Google Play team has confirmed that starting yesterday Indian Android App Developers can sell paid applications, in-app products, and subscriptions in Google Play, with monthly payouts to their local bank accounts.
This development has been talks for couple of months now. Few days back, India was added in the list of countries that could sell apps, but then it was suddenly removed. I had personally tried registering the seller account, but I could not do it. Looks like all the confusion is now cleared.
How to Get Started with Play Store?
Indian developers interested in selling their apps on Play store will have to first sign in to their Developer Console and setting up a Google Checkout Merchant account . If the apps are already published as free, developers can monetize them by adding in-app products or subscriptions. For new apps, developers can publish the apps as paid, or free which are Ad-supported or subscriptions based.
Google also announced that they are adding buyer’s currency support for India. What this means is that Indian Android users can buy Google play store apps in local currency (i.e.: Rupees).
Even with all the difficult regulations that India has, Google has added support for Indian banks / currencies because of the growth that Google is witnessing in India. The blogpost mentions that Android device activations in India have jumped more than 400%, bringing millions of new users to Google Play and driving huge increases in app downloads.
In the last six months alone, Android users in India have downloaded more apps than in the previous three years combined, and India has rocketed to become the fourth-largest market worldwide for app downloads. Indian’s are surely adding significantly to Google’s bottom line!
