Sriram Vadlamani has mentioned a relevant point – There will be only one device in the bag — Call it a tablet, smartphone or a netbook.

The future trend of backpacks for carrying gadgets will be small and slim backpacks rather than the current bulky ones. The reason being that Small size netbook and Tablets are better mobile computing devices than traditional laptop which has power backup limitations and weigh upto 4 kgs and netbooks are also very affordable for the middle class to have a mobility device rather than purchasing 14.1 / 15.6 laptops which cost anywhere between 25000 – 45000 whereas netbooks are available within 20000 range with fantastic power backup. Most branded backpack manufacturers already have models for the small size netbooks and tablets.

    @ Sriram,
Though I am not a gadget person, while reading your comment I remembered the movie “Ultraviolet” starring Mila Jovovich. I think it is filmed in Shanghai tower.
When she escapes from the tower, she goes to a vending machine and keeps her hand in the sensing area. The vending machine recognizes her with her finger prints and when she feeds some money into the machine, she gets a plastic card which is supposed to be a use and throw mobile phone.
I also saw a Discovery programme where they are inventing a computer like a plastic paper. The paper can be bent, rolled but data is still streaming in it.
The reason why I mentioned the above two things is may be in 2100 onwards, people will not carry enything. When they want to refer to anything in their multitasking notepad, all they have to do is go to the nearest vendsing machine, stick your hand in the sensing area, the machine recognizes you, pushes out a plastic multitasking notepad with all your personal data in it. Once you are done with it, simply press some button like Trash (or something similar). The Notepad updates your data in the main memory in the network and destroys the plastic note pad. You throw it in garbage (just like we do today with our news paper. After reading it in metro, we throw it in garbage). Again when you need your notepad, go to the vending machine.

Now people can ask, what we do for the music on the run? May be after 2100, the Music player will become so minute, it may already be existing in your wrist watch and you dont need to carry it at all. The music is accessed by the wrist watch from your data bank stored in some network and you pull a cable from the watch (like James Bond) and plug it into your ears.

May be this is a bouncer. Or too much :) But this is what came to my mind.

    Just my two paisa :

Now that Steve Jobs isn’t running Apple anymore, I’m not sure what the future holds for us. But here’s what I see :

There will be only one device in the bag — Call it a tablet, smartphone or a netbook. This device will be a multitasker where it can act as a phone or an music player(via a bluetooth headset) and it can give out an external keyboard making it a netbook (something like Asus Transformer). That has the potential to replace 3 devices in that bag.

As for the textbooks, they are already becoming obsolete as many schools in the US are floating the idea of iPad in schools.

Even for 2010 scenario too, the notion of having a smartphone and a music player is redundant. Smartphone is already a music player. Unless battery power is a huge concern, I’m not sure why those kids are carrying both.

@sriram actually altaf has suggested a good point. You should actually extrapolate on you comment and make a post as to what future backpacks will hold…

Arun Prabhudesai I am looking forward to the response of the Reliance's new tablet in Indian market. Still, as you said it will take years, probably till internet, email, social web, et al becomes necessity to a common man.

    3. Safiuddin Syed says

True! Anyways – the road towards it have already been laid. I expect that day to be before 2015.

I ask every one to extrapolate this presentation to show the backpack essentials of future i.e.2020, 2050, 2100 etc.
Start the excersize and the thinking process starts.
I am interested to see what readers come up here with :)

  14. Meher Ranjan says

I though today's backpack will just have a tablet. :D nonetheless a good one.

  15. Yash says

The pencil bag and Spiral notebook remains. However this surely shows an American backpack. Stuff like Pocket PC never caught up in India. People did use those Digital Diaries from Casio though.
