India 87th on corruption list – Will we ever improve?

57

Have you noticed how a bunch of ants surround a cube of sugar? Similarly, where there is big money involved – the corruption will most likely find its roots dug deep into the system. It is literally under every stone you turn. And, by now, most of us in India have learned to live with corruption as a part and parcel of our life.

In India, the tentacles of corruption are spread far and wide in all horizons of life and not just limited to government organizations. Recent instances of IPL scam and the Commonwealth Games fiasco underscores as to how a big moolah can attract corruption even in a Gentleman’s game.

Moreover, corruption is not just limited to India. It is a massive phenomena and a real cancer destroying the benefits of globalization in many poor countries.

The 2010 Corruption Perceptions Index shows that three quarters of the 178 countries in the index have fared miserably in terms of corruption problem.

Specifically, India has slipped three places in global rankings of most corrupt countries, from 84 in 2009 to 87 this year.

Corruption Index

On the ranking based on the scale from 0 (perceived to be highly corrupt) to 10 (low level of corruption), India scored 3.3 to grab 87th position in sharing with Jamaica and Liberia. It is understood that the CWG has to take blame for India’s poor show – on account of large-scale corruption in preparation to hosting the grand event.

On a positive note, only 5 countries – Denmark, New Zealand, Singapore, Finland and Sweden – managed to score higher than 9 points which indicates the list of least corrupted nations. The countries that ranked as most corrupt nations were Somalia, Myanmar, Afghanistan and Iraq.

The report released by Transparency International, which is based on input from 13 different experts and business surveys, further indicates that the global financial crisis took a toll on people’s views of corruption in government.

Notable among decliners over the past one year are some of the countries most affected by the financial crisis precipitated by transparency and integrity deficits. The survey highlighted the fact that few of the improvers were from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Can India do better in the next edition of the survey?

    No guesses here !
Whooping 91% of reported bribe demands originate from government officials in India.
The greatest sources of bribe demands, were from national level Government officials (33%), the police (30%), state/provincial officials and employees (16%), and city officials (10%) respectively .
Do you know which of the two Indian ministries ask for bribe more than other? – They are Customs office (13%) and Taxation and Water (9%).
China fares slightly well when it comes to Government officials taking bribe (85%) – Another major difference is that India Police (30%) are far more corrupt than their Chinese counterparts (only 11%).

HOPE WE ARE NOT WORKING ABOVE DEPT.

Some one posted that we are not paying taxes on time. why should we have to pay taxes. if the government is using for rite things then no problem, but they are using for their family members. 500+ crore gone to raja(2G spectrum). India iron wore its nation wealth but gali janardhan made it as his family wealth. Most of the educated people are least bother bcoz they are getting enough salaries. As the population is more and people think about their families alone these things are common. Revolution has to come. If today i start fighting against corruption tomorrow i will be in jail. Then who will look after my family. Revolution Should come at least in 30% of the population then only things will get set rite other wise days will come where one person will kill other one to survive.

The Currency notes Of 1000/- , 500/- & 100/- used in india should bear a valid expiry date.

Make the bribe-taker public. Those who have taken large bribes should be jailed for life or executed. Only then will we improve.

Here is my proposal for bribe amounts vs jail term:
    Rs. 1000 = 1 year.
    Rs. 10,000 = 10 years.
Up to Rs. 1,00,000 = life.
    Above Rs. 1,00,000 = execution.

Don't spare even the PM and senior political leaders.
I bet corruption will drop like a brick within a week.

    1. Nikunj Agarwal says

      And so will the government.
Our jails will get overcrowded with offenders of petty crimes, and it will increase the stress on our already building economy.
We must realize India is only 60 years old. We are one of the most recent governments of the world, and even then we are better than half the world in terms of corruption.
      Why must you crib?

At the bottom evey one of us is corrupt, how many salaried folks dont fudge rent receipts, medical bills, LTC bills, telephone bills etc to get tax benefits? How many business people dont fudge accounts or even maintain accounts? An average Indian is corrupt and at the end the reason we can give is that “that ‘XYZ’ person is doing more……..”

  31. balaji yadhav says

I have already discussed in this forum about corruption and have also given some facts how different forms of corruption affects the Indian society differently.
Tax evasion may not necessarily be bad as there is “more value for money” in the hands of the individuals than in the hands of Govt as it creates more jobs than in the hands of the uneducated politicians and their worthless schemes.
“Nepotism and locking up of equity outside India (in Swiss Banks) are the form of corruption which will affect India adversely as “productive” people don’t get the jobs they deserve and much needed investment in India is locked up outside.Thats why “Pinami” investments are not that bad as it is atleast circulated back to the Indian economy in one way or the other and hopefully creates jobs for India.
By the way as i said before what is branded as “Corruption” in India is treated as legal in the United States as “lobbyist culture” every single politician in United states takes money from the lobbyists and its perfectly legal there.Just imagine Raja has taken about billion dollars from the mobile industry as Donation before the 2G spectrum auction,it would have perfectly legal for him to do that in US.
Note that there was a Senator in US who apologized to BP for the media pressure on the Oil Spill fiasco Look who’s apologizing to whom the US Govt apologizing to BP for the spill which BP made. Its not bad as it is made out to be but there is one truth we have to accept. In India we pay bribes for making the govt to do what they ought to have done but in the US they pay bribes to make the Govt to do what they shouldn’t be doing.

  32. Ashish Srivastava says

Corruption may not be removed or reduced as long as the licence raj generation is still in charge. The silver lining is that the new generation is really looking forward to step up the quality of administration and the way we are perceived in the global community. The real challenge though is NOT TO GIVE UP.
The kalmadis and Bhanot’s of India are dragging us back into the age old India, and Nayaranmurthys of India are trying to take us to the new era. We need to be on NRN’s side.

  33. liju philip says

Till we pay bribes, corruption wont reduce. The middle class which complaints the most is the most irresponsible in India. They are the ones who demand bribe, pay bribe, make ways and means of beating the rules, not pay taxes on time etc.

  34. Sahil says

why are we surprised? We are also a part of the corruption rally….how many of us would not pay to get our work done, to avoid the hassels. I remember a saying “Talk don’t cook rice”..till development is on its spree agreeing to corruption is fine, not encouraged though. The problem that I see is corruption is high and work quality is low with exorbitant budgets followed by series of unfruitful investigations…

    1. Arun Prabhudesai says

You are right Sahil….But the point is that under normal circumstances, we should not have hassles to get our work done…Babu’s CREATE hassles so that we pay bribe…

      1. Vishal Sathyan says

Both of you are wrong. The country with the least corruption is given the first place, making our neighbouring countries more corrupt than us. We are fortunate if we go there and observe their feelings.

But, it is a fact that Asia is the most corrupt continent in the World. The most corrupt countries – Pakistan, Myanmar and Afghanistan – are in Asia.

  35. Altaf Rahman says

    Hey Viral,

In the last one month itself, there are many lists involving countries which are ranked according to various factors like most corrupt, gender bias, most livable country, social welfare, per capita income etc.

Is it not interesting that some one (may be Arun:) ) compiles a mother of all lists and states the rank of each country according to factor?

In fact we dont need to compile records for all countries on the planet. Only major countries, India and our neighboring countries be represented in the table. If the ranking shows some extraordinary figure (such as India is even below some african countries in a certain factor) the country contrasting that fact to be included.

    Only my two paisa :)

In fact no ohter site or media or any mag has ever done that before.

  36. Aditi says

    Title is misleading Viralbhai.

If India is 87th most corrupt country, then replace India with New zealand.
Is New zealand 1st most corrupt country ?

It should be, India stands 87th in Transparency. Or
    India __count-from-bottom__ most corrupt country.

    1. Viral says

Agreed Aditi… Done the requisite changes. Thanks for drawing my attention on the glitch in title. :)

      1. Vishal Sathyan says

In this status, the country with the least corruption is given the first place. New Zealand is the least corrupt country and India is the 87th least corrupt country. So, both of you are wrong.

    2. Vishal Sathyan says

You love all countries except my India. If I say even a small word against Pakistan, you will become angry, but if you say highly against India, you will not become angry. You are the real fanatic! You are the real fool of India!
