I am an Android fan-boy (yeah, I know I have repeated this many times earlier) and I am super delighted with the growth that Android is seeing world-wide. Infact, Android’s growth over past quarter has been so good that it has now passed Iphone iOS in sales worldwide.
According to latest quarterly numbers released by Gartner on Smartphone sales to end-users by Operating System – Android based phones have sold 10.6 million units notching up 17.2 percent of market share.
While, I must admit that prima-facie we are comparing a single hardware (iPhone) which carries Apple iOS against bunch of phones that have Android platform on them – What I am trying to point here is the kind of meteoric growth that Android is seeing.
Take this – In corresponding 2nd quarter last year Apple iOS had a market share of 13 percent as compared to mere 1.3 percent of Android. While this year, Android has gone from 1.3 percent to 17.2 percent as compared to Apple iOS which saw just 1.2 percent market share to 14.2 percent.
Google now ranks third behind Symbian and RIM (Research in Motion) in Smartphone OS market share. Market leader Symbian has been the biggest looser with a fall of close to 10 percent (From 51 percent in 2009 to 41.2 percent in 2010). RIM on the other hand has lost little ground loosing about 0.8 percent market share (From 19 percent to 18.2 percent).

The biggest beneficiary of Android surge has been HTC, who have come out with multiple Android based handsets. They managed to double their market share to 1.8 percent. Even Samsung who have many Android phones increased their handset market share by 0.8 percent.
Like I have mentioned before, Android is going to be market leader very soon, thanks to their open nature and excellent community of developers. It is not as polished as Apple iOS is, but it is matter of time before it gets there…

whilst i agree that Android phones will rule the market in the coming years, you still cannot overrule the technology of OS4 operating system from Apple Iphone. its super fast and can churn out data and “in -between” scales of information in a jiffy! its appealing and SMART. its touch screen cannot be compared with any living mobile manufacturers in this world.
YES! there has been a problem with its frequent complaints of “dead frequency” which currently is boosted with a separate antennae provided by Apple, in time this problem will be solved and this regrettable mistake overruled.
Another thing about Apple is that they never made any of their products for the masses but for the discerned FEW! its Quality, Personality at a Price! period. which proves its 2.7% world market share. They never targeted their product to become market leaders whether it was the Apple computer to I Pods to I Phones. Unlike Nokia which manufactures for all, meaning there is a product for all levels of the population, churning new models every 3 weeks with similar features and same looks, adding and subtracting some features from other existing models, sometimes the only change being the Alphanumerical model number.
Apple’s OS 4 or even 3GS is fast and rapid and it still remains to be seen if Android can give that quality which Apple delivers. Android may equal its rivals in the coming years but it can never overtake Apple in delivering QUALITY!!
Apple is in a different league by itself and not bothered with world FIGURES that show increase in its yearly market share, it never was aggressive there, but it always concentrated in FACTS of their product that it delivered CLASS and it will always BE!!
