Fighting corruption ingeniously – Zero Rupee Note

24

Corruption is a huge problem is India – Trust me, even if we are able to bring down the corruption even by 50%, it will skyrocket India’s GDP. More than 90% of all government transactions are fraught with corruption either directly or indirectly (This figure I came across last year in some survey, unable to find the link).

(Many probably know about this as this initiative was started last year, however, I am putting this across to readers, as I just came across this)

0-rupee-note

A NGO in Chennai – 5th Pillar – started this initiative last year whose sole aim is to put an end to corruption in India – They have come out with a 0 Rupee note, which looks similar to a 50 rupee note, but has Zero Rupees written on one side and on the other side you have this:

Zero-Rupee-back

What are you supposed to do with 0 Rupee Note

The zero currency note in your country’s currency is a tool to help you achieve the goal of zero corruption. The note is a way for any human being to say NO to corruption without the fear of facing an encounter with persons in authority.

Next time someone asks you for a bribe, just take your country’s zero currency note and hand it to them. This will let the other person know that you refuse to give or take any money in order to perform services required by law or to give or take money to do something illegal.

I think, we need such kind of initiative in every nook & corner of India. If we need to end corruption in India, its not the government, but us, every citizen of India have to stop giving bribes to get our work done. I know its easier said than done, but I am going to try – Will you?

The 5th Pillar Organization is really doing its part! And yes! Its making students seek out the often-unspoken arena of politics. And I'd suggest the really interested ones to contact them because I had a few encounters with some of the active members of the organization and it sort of assured me that they're having it all organized.

This is SIVA PRASAD Asst Executive Engineer GNSS Div in Irrigation department in Andhra Pradesh at Proddatur town in Kadapa district , had been fighting against crimes and corruption for last 25 years. Went to police custody 21 times and faced remand in jails 3 times since I questioned corruption and tried a lot to recover more than 250000 million rupees into Govt accounts. Why because in India any body can purchase justice on bribes. A few only ie like our Hon’ble Prime Mister Sri Man Mohan Singh try to live & lead life out of corruption . But most of the officials , politicians & bureaucrats are mostly corrupt babus can control every thing including courts too in India. My experiences is furnished below if you wish to utilize my services in the interest my country India.

If we can see that the major political parties are not entertained to spend as they like in the elections then we can win the first major battle against corruption. After that if we can deal with the IAS and IPS officers then the process to trickles down effectively.
without these if we try to catch and harass the small fish it is going to do much better to the society.

    hii

Buddy taking initiative again corruption is well praised.
But can u let us understand what is d all logic behind ‘0’ rupee note.
1st we need to understand that.
2nd if it has some significant backing is provided behind it then it can prove fruitful.
Making a team of volunteers across each city/district level in a organised way with hierarchy can provide a platform for those who really want to fight corruption. Social sites also can prove some good of it. Organising meets at small & large levels wil do sth gud.
I believe majority of people want to fight against corruption but they dnt know whom to approach & what to do.
There are also few honest Govt. servant-civil servants who I knw can provide some significant backing.
Once the performa is ready Media-tieup can also be done.
Even there r few Industrialist in my knowledge who can support us wid funding n backup.

Lets start a discussion n meet physically to find d next level of possibility.

I tried a lot – but the system has become rusted – and without greasing it does not move.
Choice 1 – Throw the system out and bring in a new system ( change all Government officials at all levels) Change the government – Bring in Emergency

    Choice 2 – Play On….

A frustrated citizen of this country – who has lost hope after trying for 47 years now

    1. Arun Prabhudesai says

      Dear Mr. Lalit,

Play on…is what we all do, and thats why it has prevailed for so many years…I think that these kind of initiatives need to be done in every nook & corner of India…the more the coverage, the more participation of citizens in these will gradually help us to bring corruption down…yes, its not easy, but we cant be frustrated and do nothing about it…
Play on…is NOT what we should do…

  15. Pradeep says

Its not easier all the time to avoid bribing.. but yes if we try and be honest up-to the level we can, i am sure it will decrease. As you said even if we can decrease it by 50% it will skyrocket the GDP.

Lets try and say no to Bribing

  16. Rohan says

Whether this makes sense or not, I don’t understand how you came to the conclusion that reducing corruption by 50% will skyrocket our GDP?

On the contrary, if the govt machinery is left alone to work sincerely, things would move at an unimaginable slow pace.

There was a great industrialist who passed bribes to govt officials and grew his business to such an extent that it contributes a huge chunk to its country’s GDP. What do you have to say about this? Incidentally, a lot of praises have been sung about the same company on this blog at various occasions.

  17. Arun Prabhudesai says

    Sharad & Madhav,

You are right to a certain extent – It may not be impractical, but we need to start somewhere – Like I have mentioned in the article, its only us the citizens of India that can do something about corruption – No one else can !

  18. Madhav Shivpuri says

    Novel, but lacks practicality.

If I play the devils advocate – So next time a traffic inspector stops you and asks for your license, yadda, yadda, until he can find a problem that he can extract money out of you. Being the smart, no-corruption nationalist, you put the zero Rupee note in the inspectors hand. What’s going to be his reaction?

Corruption is a part of life in any developing country Tell me a developing country which does not have corruption.
Can we do an analysis of What type of corruption affects the economy
Believe me People who hold property in Benami names are better than people who park their money in Swiss Bank accounts cause it is atleast invested back to economy similar to people who run business in Benami.
Most of corruption in India is tax evasion which is again not entirely bad considering the fiscal consciousness of Indian govt and politicians.More value for money if in the hands of the individuals than the govt considering the inefficiencies of the various govt schemes which is again rife with corruption.
The worst cases of corruption are the govt construction projects – badly constructed roads, bridges etc, stalling in the purchase of crucial defence weapons for our national forces,no rapid improvement in public utility services(which probably needs to be privatized). All of the above will ultimately affect our economy through inadequate infrastructure.
Im not sure about the shooting up of the GDP cause i believe most of the corruption money is invested back through various means(hopefully!!!).
More than the GDP- Corruption leads to erosion of “MORAL JUSTICE” in our country Criminals escape punishment, unworthy candidates get degrees, jobs, election seats etc.

Even if it doesnt, its still a good move..
