Indian Railways has deployed an artificial intelligence-powered central monitoring system to manage the growing passenger rush during the Diwali and Chhath festive season. The facility, established at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi, monitors passenger movement across 38 railway stations using live CCTV feeds, AI-based tools and real-time operational data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the system on November 7, highlighting the role of technology in improving crowd management, passenger safety and train operations during peak travel periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI War Room Monitors 38 Railway Stations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The centralised War Room allows railway officials to monitor passenger movement across multiple stations simultaneously. Live CCTV feeds cover platforms, foot overbridges and areas surrounding railway stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials can zoom into individual camera feeds to examine specific locations and identify developing crowd-related situations. AI-enabled tools also allow them to analyse activities and incidents through prompts, helping assess situations and initiate timely responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The system additionally tracks train movements and delays. Officials can identify operational disruptions, examine their causes and coordinate corrective measures to improve punctuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Delhi Railway Station Records Heavy Footfall<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Delhi railway station has witnessed a significant increase in passenger movement during the festive season, particularly among travellers heading towards Bihar and other parts of North India for Chhath Puja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vaishnaw said passenger footfall at the station had reached approximately eight lakh daily during the peak festive period, reflecting the scale of travel demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To manage the crowds, dedicated passenger holding areas have been established at 20 railway stations. These facilities allow passengers to wait safely before their trains arrive, reducing congestion on platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

18,000 Special Trains and 700 AI Cameras Deployed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indian Railways has expanded its special train operations to accommodate the seasonal increase in passenger demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 18,000 special trains are being operated this festive season, compared with approximately 12,000 during the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 700 AI-enabled cameras have also been deployed to strengthen surveillance and improve monitoring at railway stations. Additional passenger scanning facilities and dedicated ticket counters have been introduced to streamline station entry and movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Railway Minister, preparations for managing the festive rush began nearly six months in advance, with particular attention given to the expected increase in passenger numbers ahead of Chhath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Delhi Station Undergoing Facility Upgrades<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indian Railways is also upgrading passenger facilities at New Delhi railway station. Improvements include luggage scanners and other infrastructure intended to reduce congestion during peak travel periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The combination of centralised monitoring, AI-enabled surveillance, additional trains and dedicated holding areas forms part of the Railways’ broader strategy to manage high passenger volumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
