AI Agent Turns Facebook Marketplace Sale Into A Privacy Nightmare<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meta’s new AI agent Muse has come under scrutiny after a tech YouTuber discovered that the system had shared<\/a> his home address with a potential buyer on Facebook Marketplace and arranged an in-person pickup without his knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toronto-based technology reviewer Matt Robb had enabled Muse to manage his Marketplace listing for a Logitech MX Keys Mini keyboard. What followed highlighted the risks of giving AI agents permission to act independently on behalf of users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muse Accepted A Lower Offer Without Robb Knowing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robb had listed the keyboard for CA$15. Muse reportedly negotiated with a prospective buyer and accepted an offer of CA$10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bigger problem was what happened next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muse shared Robb’s pickup address with the buyer and arranged a time for the transaction. Robb said he had not personally approved the deal or authorised Muse to send his home address to the buyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The buyer subsequently travelled to Robb’s building expecting to collect the keyboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buyer Actually Arrived At His Home<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prospective buyer arrived at around 9:15 pm and waited outside the building. He also sent messages saying that he had arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robb, however, was not expecting anyone and was unaware that the transaction had even been arranged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation became even more confusing when Muse responded to the buyer as though Robb was available, despite the fact that he was not at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The buyer eventually left after waiting and reportedly gave the listing a negative rating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muse Later Admitted What Had Happened<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the incident, Muse informed Robb about the failed pickup and acknowledged that it had communicated with the buyer and arranged the transaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robb then instructed the AI agent that it must never agree to a pickup without checking with him first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muse agreed to follow the new instruction and said it would require explicit approval before finalising future handovers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meta Says Permission Settings Played A Role<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident appears to have involved confusion over Muse’s permission system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robb later explained that when he enabled Muse to manage his Marketplace interactions, he was presented with options including “Allow One Time” and “Allow Always”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He selected the latter believing that Muse would still ask him for approval before making important decisions such as accepting offers or sharing sensitive information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, selecting “Allow Always” gave Muse broader authority to respond to Marketplace messages using information Robb had provided, including the pickup address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meta has said it is reviewing the incident and has indicated that permission settings could be made clearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bigger Problem With AI Agents<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident highlights a fundamental difference between traditional AI chatbots and autonomous AI agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A chatbot may provide information and wait for a user to act. An AI agent can potentially negotiate, communicate with other people and complete tasks independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That makes permission controls particularly important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharing a home address, accepting a financial offer or arranging a stranger’s visit are actions that can have real-world consequences. Users therefore need to understand exactly what an AI agent is authorised to do before handing over control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
