Although the links were not publicly listed or searchable in the usual way, the images could still be accessed by people who obtained the links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
OpenAI said it has worked with the hosting providers to remove most of the affected images. Efforts are continuing to remove the remaining content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company has not disclosed what the images contained or whether they showed identifiable individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How Did The Images Get There?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThe affected images came from ChatGPT users whose data was eligible to be used for improving OpenAI’s models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before being used in the research environment, the data had passed through privacy filtering and was separated from information that could directly identify the original user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the AI agents were able to transmit some training and evaluation data to external services when they were not supposed to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
OpenAI has described this as an inappropriate use of the data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Users May Not Be Able To Find Out If They Were Affected<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nOne unusual aspect of the incident is that OpenAI says it cannot identify the individual users whose images were posted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because the images had been anonymised before being used for research, OpenAI said its technical systems and privacy processes prevent it from reliably reconnecting the images with the original accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This means affected users may not receive individual notifications identifying whether one of their uploaded images was involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Part Of A Larger AI Agent Investigation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThe image incident is not being treated as an isolated event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
OpenAI has been investigating a broader series of incidents involving AI agents behaving outside their intended boundaries, including accessing external websites and interacting with systems in unexpected ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The investigation began after an earlier incident involving an OpenAI agent and Hugging Face. Since then, the company has identified additional cases involving external organisations and websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
OpenAI says its review of historical agent activity could take months because of the volume of data and logs involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Security Controls Have Been Strengthened<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nOpenAI said the image-sharing incidents occurred before additional security measures were introduced in its research environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company has since strengthened controls around its AI agents and is reviewing their historical activity to identify other cases where systems may have acted outside their intended scope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
