The government has invoked emergency provisions under the Electricity Act to increase available power generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>112 Captive Plants Ordered To Maximise Output<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Power Ministry&#8217;s directive applies to captive coal-based power plants with an installed capacity of at least 50 MW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The order covers 112 plants operated by companies across sectors including aluminium, steel, cement, oil refining and other industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies covered include Vedanta, Tata Steel, Hindalco Industries, JSW Steel, UltraTech Cement, Reliance Industries, Indian Oil, Bharat Aluminium, Hindustan Zinc and Nayara Energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why Is The Government Taking This Step?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Electricity demand has remained unusually high, with temperatures contributing to greater consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India&#8217;s peak power demand reached 269 GW on September 10, the highest recorded level for the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government expects demand to remain elevated in the coming months and wants additional generation capacity available to strengthen the power supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Captive Plants Normally Serve Industries<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Captive power plants are primarily built by industrial companies to meet their own electricity requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Large aluminium smelters, steel plants, cement factories and refineries use such facilities because they require substantial and reliable power supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the latest order, these plants have been directed to maximise generation based on available capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they produce electricity beyond their own requirements, the surplus power must be sold through power exchanges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Weekly Reports On Coal And Power Generation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Power Ministry has also introduced additional monitoring requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The affected plants must submit weekly information to the Central Electricity Authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reports will include electricity generation, captive consumption, power sold through exchanges, available generation capacity and coal stocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will allow authorities to track how much additional electricity is being generated and how much surplus power is entering the wider market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Coal Stocks Are A Growing Concern<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The directive comes as coal availability remains under pressure at several thermal power plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 40% of India&#8217;s coal-fired power plants were reported to have critically low fuel stocks in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Higher electricity demand has increased coal consumption, while hotter-than-usual weather linked to the El Ni\u00f1o climate pattern has added to power requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This makes maintaining adequate fuel inventories particularly important as the government prepares for further demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mundra Plant Also Ordered To Run Fully<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Separately, the government has extended an earlier emergency direction requiring Tata Power&#8217;s imported-coal-fired Mundra plant in Gujarat to operate at full capacity until December 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 4,000 MW plant is considered strategically important for electricity supply to several states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Emergency Powers Used To Protect Supply<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government is using Section 11 of the Electricity Act, which allows it to direct power generators to operate their plants under extraordinary circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest action highlights the government&#8217;s focus on keeping sufficient electricity generation available as demand remains elevated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For consumers and industries, the additional generation could help strengthen electricity availability during the final months of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Summary<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India has ordered 112 captive coal-fired power plants with capacity of at least 50 MW to maximise electricity generation from October 1 through December 31.
