Reliance Jio and US telecom operator T-Mobile have achieved what the companies describe as the world’s first 5G Standalone roaming connection, marking a significant development in international mobile connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5G SA Roaming Between India And US<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the new arrangement, T-Mobile customers travelling to India can access Jio’s 5G Standalone network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, Jio customers travelling to the US can roam on T-Mobile’s 5G Standalone network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means travellers can maintain access to 5G SA connectivity across international borders, provided their devices, plans and network coverage support the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Makes 5G Standalone Different<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike 5G Non-Standalone networks, which continue to rely partly on existing 4G LTE infrastructure, 5G Standalone uses a dedicated 5G core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This architecture is designed to provide lower latency, faster connectivity and improved network reliability. It also creates a foundation for technologies such as network slicing, advanced IoT applications and real-time communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For international roaming, however, connecting two independent 5G SA networks requires significant technical integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Syniverse Enables The Connection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interoperability between Jio and T-Mobile’s networks has been enabled through Syniverse’s connectivity platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The platform provides the network interconnection required for 5G SA roaming and supports the secure exchange of signalling and traffic between operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The technology is intended to help operators establish commercial 5G SA roaming without having to build completely separate connectivity arrangements for every international partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voice And Data Capabilities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The achievement goes beyond simply providing 5G data connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The roaming arrangement supports 5G Standalone services for both data and voice, including Voice over New Radio, or VoNR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supporting voice over a 5G SA roaming connection is technically more complex than supporting data because voice services need to manage factors such as latency, mobility and handovers between networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For customers travelling between India and the US, the technology could make international connectivity more seamless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
