Officials then discovered that a backup fibre-optic connection had also been damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The simultaneous loss of the primary and backup connections left the facility with severely reduced communications capability, forcing authorities to restrict flights in parts of the Northeast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Construction Work Damaged Backup Fibre Line<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said a construction crew accidentally damaged a fibre line in New Jersey, contributing to the telecommunications outage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The damaged backup connection was described by FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford as a major break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The incident highlighted the importance of having multiple reliable communication routes for critical aviation infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Flights Gradually Resume<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n By Monday evening, flight operations were beginning to resume at several affected airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Flights were restarting at LaGuardia and Philadelphia, while incoming flights at Newark and JFK were still facing restrictions at that stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, even after the communications systems were restored, passengers were expected to face continuing delays because cancelled and diverted flights created a backlog across the affected airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n FAA Faces Pressure To Modernise Infrastructure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The disruption comes as the US works on a broader overhaul of its ageing air traffic control infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The incident has renewed attention on the resilience of the communication systems supporting the country’s aviation network.
