Income Falls While Expenses Rise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n Air India\u2019s consolidated total income declined to \u20b971,869.94 crore in FY26<\/strong>, compared with \u20b978,635.61 crore in FY25.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAt the same time, total expenses increased to \u20b993,733.31 crore<\/strong>, up from \u20b989,317.12 crore in the previous financial year.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThis combination of lower income and higher expenses contributed to the substantial increase in the airline\u2019s annual loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Aircraft Maintenance Costs Increase<\/h2>\n\n\n\n Aircraft repair and maintenance emerged as one of the areas where Air India spent more during FY26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maintenance expenses increased to \u20b914,976.45 crore<\/strong>, compared with \u20b913,901.82 crore a year earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\nInterestingly, fuel expenses moved in the opposite direction. Air India\u2019s fuel bill declined to \u20b926,871.80 crore<\/strong> from \u20b929,023.37 crore in FY25.<\/p>\n\n\n\nHowever, the saving on fuel was outweighed by higher costs in other areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Foreign Exchange Loss Surges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n One of the biggest increases came from foreign exchange losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Air India\u2019s forex loss jumped to \u20b97,388.23 crore in FY26<\/strong>, compared with \u20b91,545.01 crore in the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe sharp increase added significant pressure to the airline\u2019s financial performance and came alongside other challenges, including airspace restrictions, geopolitical disruptions, fuel price volatility and operational issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
AI171 Accident Also Reflected in Accounts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n The financial year was also affected by the AI171 accident in June 2025<\/strong>, which killed 260 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\nExceptional items during FY26 stood at \u20b9429.05 crore<\/strong>, including an amount related to the accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAir India said its parent company has adequate aviation hull and liability insurance coverage. The airline has received the agreed insurance amount for the loss of the aircraft and related incidental costs under its hull insurance policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company expects liabilities arising from claims to be substantially covered by insurance based on the information currently available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Standalone Loss Also Widens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n Air India\u2019s standalone loss increased to \u20b915,367.75 crore in FY26<\/strong>, compared with \u20b93,975.75 crore in FY25.<\/p>\n\n\n\nStandalone total income also declined sharply to \u20b953,662.15 crore<\/strong>, from \u20b964,343.09 crore a year earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe difference between the standalone and consolidated figures reflects the inclusion of Air India Express in the consolidated results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tata Group Sees Transformation as Long-Term Process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran has described the airline\u2019s transformation as a five- to ten-year journey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe process involves addressing legacy systems, fleet modernisation, organisational culture, supply-chain challenges and building a larger pool of aviation professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Former Ethiopian Airlines Group chief Tewolde Gebremariam is also set to take charge as Air India\u2019s managing director and chief executive later this month, as the airline enters another phase of its transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
