{"id":1314008,"date":"2026-09-19T11:42:18","date_gmt":"2026-09-19T06:12:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/?p=1314008"},"modified":"2026-09-19T11:42:32","modified_gmt":"2026-09-19T06:12:32","slug":"social-media-can-be-banned-for-every-under-13-kid-in-entire-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/social-media-can-be-banned-for-every-under-13-kid-in-entire-europe\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Media Can Be Banned For Every Under 13 Kid In Entire Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The European Commission has proposed new rules that would <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/eu-commission-proposes-social-media-ban-children-under-13-2026-09-17\/\">prevent children under 13 from having social media accounts<\/a><\/strong> across the European Union, as part of a wider effort to strengthen online safety for minors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposal, called the <strong>EU KIDS Act<\/strong>, was presented on September 17 and would introduce common age-based rules for social media and video-sharing platforms across the bloc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"740\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/images-39.jpeg\" alt=\"Social Media Can Be Banned For Every Under 13 Kid In Entire Europe\" class=\"wp-image-1314016\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/images-39.jpeg 740w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/images-39-300x168.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No Social Media Accounts Under 13<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the proposed rules, children below 13 would not be allowed to create social media accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children aged <strong>13 and 14<\/strong> could use so-called mini accounts, but these would have to be created and supervised by a parent or guardian. These accounts would have limited features and a proposed daily usage limit of <strong>one hour<\/strong> for age-appropriate social media and video-sharing content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Independent social media accounts would be allowed from the age of <strong>15<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Platforms Would Need to Verify Age<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposed legislation would also require platforms to use reliable age-assurance systems to determine whether users fall within the applicable age categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The European Commission plans to support age verification through certified digital tools, including the planned <strong>European Digital Identity Wallet<\/strong>, while keeping the verification process separate from individual platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Existing accounts belonging to children below the applicable age limits would also have to be reviewed once the rules take effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Addictive Features Could Be Restricted<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The KIDS Act goes beyond age limits. It would require online services used by minors to adopt stronger safety-by-design measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Platforms would face restrictions on features such as <strong>infinite scrolling, personalised advertising, profiling-based recommendation systems and unsolicited contact from strangers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Push notifications during defined sleeping hours would also be restricted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children&#8217;s profiles would be private by default, while access to features such as geolocation, cameras and microphones would be limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI Chatbots Also Included<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposal covers more than conventional social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its scope includes <strong>video-sharing platforms, online games, AI companions and chatbots<\/strong> used by minors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI companions and chatbots would be turned off by default for children under the proposed framework, while platforms would have to demonstrate that their services are safe and age-appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Proposal Still Needs Approval<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The EU KIDS Act is currently a <strong>legislative proposal<\/strong>, not an immediate ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It must still go through the European Union&#8217;s legislative process, including approval by EU governments and the European Parliament. The proposal could therefore be amended before any rules come into force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The European Commission wants the legislation to create a common EU-wide framework instead of having different age restrictions and online safety requirements across individual member states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The European Commission has proposed the <strong>EU KIDS Act<\/strong>, which would ban social media accounts for children under 13 and allow only parent-supervised mini accounts for 13- and 14-year-olds. Independent accounts would begin at 15. The proposal also targets addictive features, personalised recommendations, unsolicited contacts, push notifications and AI chatbots.
