India’s outsourcing industry is moving towards higher-value services as artificial intelligence automates more routine work, with the country’s software and business services exports continuing to expand despite concerns over AI-driven job losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research from ING suggests that AI is changing the type of work being outsourced rather than eliminating demand for Indian technology and business services<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Software Services Become a Larger Part of Economy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

India’s software services exports have increased to around 5.2% of GDP<\/a><\/strong>, compared with approximately 3.3% before the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Business services, including finance, accounting, engineering, research and analytics, have also expanded significantly. Their share of GDP has more than doubled to around 3.3%<\/strong>, from roughly 1.6% before COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together, software and business services exports now account for approximately 8.5% of India’s GDP<\/strong>, providing a significant source of foreign exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Routine Work Is Being Replaced<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

AI is putting pressure on traditional outsourcing activities that depend heavily on repetitive human labour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tasks such as data entry, document verification and basic customer support<\/strong> are increasingly suitable for automation. This is changing the type of services companies seek from Indian outsourcing providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, demand is increasing for more specialised capabilities, including analytics, software development, risk management, engineering design and research and development<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This shift is pushing India’s outsourcing industry towards work that requires greater technical expertise and human judgement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India Still Holds a Major Outsourcing Share<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

India continues to command more than half of the global outsourcing industry<\/strong> and earns around $205 billion annually from software services exports<\/strong>, according to ING.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sector supports approximately 5.8 million workers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India’s digitally delivered services exports have also grown by 45% since 2022<\/strong>, compared with 32% globally. The faster growth indicates that India has continued to gain market share even as AI changes the economics of technology services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hiring Is Already Changing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The impact of AI is more visible in employment patterns than in overall export demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India’s largest IT companies have become significantly more cautious about hiring, particularly for entry-level and mid-level positions. AI-driven productivity improvements mean companies can potentially handle more work without increasing employee numbers at the same rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, demand is growing for skills related to AI, software, analytics and cybersecurity<\/strong>, while Global Capability Centres are also absorbing higher-skilled technology professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI Is Reshaping India’s Outsourcing Model<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The shift could gradually change India’s traditional outsourcing advantage. Instead of competing primarily on the availability of large numbers of relatively low-cost workers, service providers are increasingly competing on specialised expertise, technology and the ability to deliver measurable business outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For India’s technology industry, the evidence so far points towards an evolution of outsourcing rather than a broad collapse in demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
