Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has launched \u2018OneTag\u2019, a new portability facility that allows FASTag users to switch their issuing bank without removing or replacing the physical FASTag sticker on their vehicle. The facility was launched at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

FASTag Bank Switching Becomes Easier<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until now, motorists wanting to change their FASTag issuer generally had to close their existing FASTag account, complete fresh onboarding with another bank and obtain a new physical tag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OneTag changes this process by allowing users to retain the FASTag already attached to their vehicle while moving to another participating issuer bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a successful switch, the existing FASTag Tag ID<\/a> and vehicle registration number remain unchanged<\/strong>. Only the bank managing the FASTag account changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portability Through Rajmargyatra App<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new facility will be available through the NHAI\u2019s Rajmargyatra mobile app<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The process includes checking the FASTag\u2019s eligibility, completing secure verification, providing customer consent, selecting the preferred issuer bank and completing the new bank\u2019s onboarding requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative has been jointly developed by Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL)<\/strong>, promoted by NHAI, and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI)<\/strong>. NPCI will provide the technology framework and update issuer information within the National Electronic Toll Collection network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Old FASTag Wallet Will Not Simply Transfer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

OneTag does not mean that the balance and responsibilities associated with the old FASTag wallet automatically move to the new bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The existing issuer will continue to handle matters related to the previous wallet, including refunds, pending transactions and other outstanding obligations<\/strong>. The newly selected bank will complete its onboarding and take responsibility after the portability process is completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

13 Crore FASTags Already Issued<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

FASTag has achieved more than 98% penetration<\/strong> across India’s tolling system, with around 13 crore FASTags issued<\/strong>, including approximately 6 crore active tags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government says FASTag-based toll collection has also significantly reduced waiting times and improved toll revenue collection. OneTag is intended to further improve the system by giving motorists greater choice among issuer banks while reducing unnecessary physical tag production and replacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next Goal: Barrier-Free Tolling<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gadkari also said the government’s next objective is to move towards zero-stoppage and zero-waiting tolling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government is working on a Multi-Lane Free Flow system using FASTag and automatic number-plate recognition technology. Gadkari has said the aim is to have barrier-free tolling across national highway toll plazas by March 2027<\/strong>, allowing vehicles to pass without stopping at conventional toll barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
