SBI-Led Consortium to Fund Vodafone Idea<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lending group includes State Bank of India, Union Bank of India and the <\/strong>National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID)<\/strong>, according to people familiar with the matter.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed financing is expected to support Vodafone Idea’s network expansion and broader business recovery. The company has been seeking fresh debt funding as it attempts to strengthen its position in India’s highly competitive telecom market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The loan is expected to have a tenure of nearly 10 years<\/strong>, although representatives of Vodafone Idea and the participating banks had not immediately commented on the reported arrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Network Investment Is a Key Priority<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vodafone Idea plans to use part of the funding to improve its network and close the gap with its larger competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The operator has lost market share to Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel in recent years while dealing with substantial spectrum and regulatory liabilities. Fresh bank financing could allow the company to accelerate capital expenditure, expand coverage and strengthen its 5G network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier in 2026, Vodafone Idea outlined a three-year investment programme involving around \u20b945,000 crore of capital expenditure<\/strong>, with network upgrades and 5G expansion among its priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Government Support Improves Funding Prospects<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed debt financing follows significant government support for Vodafone Idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities earlier reduced the company’s adjusted gross revenue liabilities and allowed much of the remaining amount to be paid over a longer period. The government had also converted around \u20b937,000 crore of Vodafone Idea’s outstanding dues into equity<\/strong>, increasing its stake in the company to 48.99%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These measures have eased some of the pressure on Vodafone Idea’s balance sheet and improved its ability to seek fresh financing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vodafone Idea Still Faces Major Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the proposed funding, Vodafone Idea remains loss-making and carries substantial financial obligations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company reported a \u20b93,750 crore loss for the quarter ended June 2026<\/strong>, although the loss was smaller than analysts had expected. It also faces significant spectrum-related payments over the coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company therefore needs to translate fresh funding into stronger revenue, higher average revenue per user and improved cash generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Birla’s Role Linked to the Loan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reported financing comes with conditions, including a requirement that Kumar Mangalam Birla remain chairman of Vodafone Idea throughout the nearly 10-year loan tenure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lenders have also sought repayment guarantees in the event of a default, according to people familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Vodafone Idea, the proposed $3.5 billion package represents a crucial opportunity to rebuild its network and strengthen its competitive position. The bigger challenge will be turning that capital into sustainable growth while meeting its long-term debt and spectrum obligations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
