Battery Storage to Become Part of New Solar and Wind Projects<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

India is preparing to make battery energy storage a mandatory component of new renewable energy projects, as the country looks to manage the growing fluctuations created by solar and wind power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"India<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Under draft regulations proposed by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), new solar and onshore wind projects commissioned from July 1, 2027, would need to include battery storage equivalent to at least <\/strong>10% of their installed capacity for two hours<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal is aimed at making renewable electricity more reliable and easier to dispatch when the sun is not shining or wind conditions change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Storage Requirement to Double by 2029<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed rules would become more stringent from July 2029<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minimum storage duration would increase from two hours to four hours<\/strong>, while the requirement to provide storage equivalent to at least 10% of the project’s capacity would remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, a 1,000 MW renewable project would initially need storage capable of holding at least 100 MW for two hours, equivalent to 200 MWh of energy storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 2029, the same capacity would require four hours of storage, or 400 MWh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why India Needs More Storage<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

India is rapidly adding solar and wind capacity, but renewable generation does not always match electricity demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solar plants generate most of their electricity during daylight hours, while demand can remain high during the evening. Wind generation can also change significantly depending on weather conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This can result in surplus renewable electricity that cannot immediately be absorbed by the grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India reportedly curtailed nearly 14% of its solar power generation between April and June<\/strong> because of surplus daytime electricity and transmission constraints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Battery storage can capture some of that excess electricity and release it later when demand rises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grid-Forming Inverters Also Proposed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The draft framework goes beyond batteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renewable projects commissioned after July 2027 would also be required to incorporate grid-forming inverter capabilities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grid-forming technology can help renewable power plants contribute to maintaining voltage and frequency stability. This becomes increasingly important as renewable sources account for a larger share of India’s electricity system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CEA has proposed that at least 15% of inverters in new renewable power plants have grid-forming controls, while power-conversion systems used in battery storage would also need the capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Higher Costs, But More Reliable Renewable Power<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mandatory storage will increase the upfront cost of renewable projects because developers will need to install batteries alongside generation equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the policy could also make renewable electricity more valuable by allowing it to be supplied when the grid needs it rather than only when solar or wind resources are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India has already introduced several measures to encourage battery storage, including viability-gap funding, infrastructure support and incentives for co-located storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Shift From Capacity to Dispatchable Power<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed rules represent a broader change in India’s renewable-energy strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The focus is gradually moving from simply adding more solar and wind capacity to ensuring that renewable electricity can be stored, controlled and delivered reliably<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As India’s clean-energy capacity expands, batteries and other storage technologies are likely to become increasingly important for balancing the national grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
