Food safety officials in Bengaluru have seized expired and improperly labelled food products worth \u20b91.38 crore<\/strong> during a special enforcement drive targeting online delivery platforms, dark stores and other food storage facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Karnataka Food Safety and Drugs Administration also seized medicines worth \u20b94.02 lakh<\/strong> <\/a>that were allegedly being stored without the required licences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inspections were carried out under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amazon and Swiggy Instamart Facilities Inspected<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The enforcement operation covered facilities associated with Amazon and Swiggy Instamart<\/strong>, along with other food storage and supply units around Bengaluru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At an Amazon facility in Devanahalli, officials found food products worth around \u20b914 lakh with incorrect or inadequate labelling<\/strong>, while expired food worth another \u20b910 lakh was seized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials examined manufacturing and expiry dates, shelf life and other mandatory labelling requirements as part of the inspections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u20b91.05 Crore in Expired or Near-Expiry Products<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the food safety department, expired or near-expiry food products worth approximately \u20b91.05 crore<\/strong> were seized during the wider operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These included nutritional products, beverages, chocolates, sweets, ghee, nuts and seeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another \u20b933 lakh worth of food products<\/strong> was seized for incorrect or inadequate labelling, bringing the total value of food products confiscated to \u20b91.38 crore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local Retailer Also Seized<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials also inspected Leo 7 Enterprises in Lingarajapuram<\/strong>, where several categories of expired and nearly expired products were reportedly found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The owner told officials that food products worth approximately \u20b956 lakh were stored at the premises. The facility was subsequently seized as authorities continued their investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medicines Stored Without Licences<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crackdown also uncovered problems involving pharmaceutical products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medicines valued at around \u20b94.02 lakh<\/strong> were seized from two e-commerce storage facilities after officials found them being stored without the necessary licences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means the enforcement operation extended beyond food safety to compliance requirements governing the storage and distribution of medicines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Probe Linked to \u2018Peptide Party\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inspections reportedly followed information and documents connected to a \u201cpeptide party\u201d<\/strong> organised in Bengaluru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigation prompted officials to examine where products supplied for such activities had originated and subsequently broaden their checks to online commerce and storage facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Health Minister U T Khader has indicated a zero-tolerance approach<\/strong> towards violations involving expired products, incorrect labelling and unauthorised storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The operation highlights a growing challenge for quick-commerce and e-commerce platforms, where products can move rapidly from dark stores to consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The action also underlines the responsibility of retailers and delivery platforms to ensure that products entering their warehouses and dark stores comply with food and drug safety requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
