India is witnessing an unprecedented wave of investment in data centres, with more than $250 billion in announced investments<\/strong>, but the sector may have a surprisingly limited direct impact on the country’s economy by the end of the decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Moody’s Ratings, India’s data centre industry is expected to contribute only around 0.13% of GDP by 2030<\/strong>, despite the enormous amount of capital being committed to building new capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Huge Investment, Small GDP Impact<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Data centres have become one of India’s biggest infrastructure investment themes, attracting domestic conglomerates, global technology companies and specialised operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moody’s estimates that data-centre construction and capital expenditure could contribute about 0.10% of India’s nominal GDP<\/strong>, while additional investment in power generation could add another 0.03%.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the facilities become fully operational, the combined contribution is expected to remain around 0.13%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With India’s economy projected to reach roughly $7.3 trillion by 2030<\/strong>, that percentage would translate into approximately $9.5 billion in annual GDP contribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why the Economic Impact Is Limited<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One major reason is the industry’s dependence on imported equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Data centres require expensive servers, semiconductors, cooling systems, GPUs and specialised IT infrastructure<\/strong>, much of which is sourced from overseas. As a result, a significant portion of the investment does not translate into domestic value addition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India can therefore attract billions of dollars in capital without capturing an equivalent share of the economic value generated by that spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Data Centres Won’t Create Millions of Jobs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sector is also highly capital-intensive and requires relatively few workers once facilities become operational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moody’s estimates that employment associated with data-centre construction could represent only around 0.01% of industry employment<\/strong>, rising to approximately 0.02% once facilities are operational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most long-term jobs will be concentrated in specialised technical and infrastructure roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means data centres could be strategically important for India’s digital economy without becoming a major mass-employment sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Power Is Less of a Problem Than Local Connectivity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

India’s large electricity system gives it an advantage over smaller markets. Moody’s expects data centres to account for less than 5% of India’s total electricity demand by 2030<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the challenge will be ensuring that sufficient transmission and distribution capacity reaches major data-centre clusters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cities such as Mumbai and emerging hubs elsewhere could face local infrastructure constraints even if electricity availability is adequate at the national level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bigger Opportunity Is Beyond the Data Centre<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moody’s assessment suggests that India could gain considerably more if data-centre investment stimulates local manufacturing, cloud adoption, digital-services exports and supporting technology industries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Large projects such as the proposed Google-Adani data centre in Visakhapatnam and TCS’s HyperVault initiative demonstrate the scale of India’s ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real economic payoff, however, may depend on whether India can build an ecosystem around these facilities rather than simply becoming a location where global companies install servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
