IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe has emerged as an unexpected social media star in Maharashtra, with his Instagram following and engagement reportedly surpassing those of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n August 2026 figures put Mundhe\u2019s Instagram following at around 34.15 lakh, compared with approximately 29.02 lakh for Fadnavis and 13.01 lakh for Shinde. He has reportedly been transferred around 25 times during roughly 20 years of service, serving in several districts and municipal bodies across Maharashtra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rather than weakening his public image, the transfers have contributed to a perception among supporters that he has remained committed to his administrative approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His Reputation Started Before Instagram<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Mundhe\u2019s popularity did not begin with his recent food-safety campaigns. During earlier postings, including as district collector, he became associated with water-conservation initiatives and efforts to reduce dependence on private water tankers in drought-affected areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That work earned him the informal reputation of a \u201cWaterman of Maharashtra\u201d and established a public image that later carried over into social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why People Are Connecting With Him<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Mundhe\u2019s appeal appears to come from the perception that rules should apply equally, regardless of who is being inspected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That image has been reinforced by action against establishments and institutions that might traditionally be considered influential. His food-safety teams have also carried out inspections in prominent government locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The result is an unusual combination of administrative authority and social-media visibility. Mundhe is no longer known only within Maharashtra\u2019s bureaucracy; his enforcement videos have turned him into a recognisable public figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His rise also reflects a broader change in how citizens encounter government officials.
