Ching-te has described the proposed payment as an “AI dividend”, arguing that ordinary people should also benefit from the extraordinary economic growth being generated by Taiwan’s technology industry.

The proposal has been included in Taiwan’s planned 2027 central government budget and will still require legislative approval before the money can be distributed.

Why Is Taiwan Giving People ₹30,000?

Taiwan has emerged as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the global AI boom.

The island is a crucial part of the global semiconductor and AI hardware supply chain, with its companies manufacturing advanced chips, AI servers and other computing equipment required by technology companies around the world.

As demand for AI infrastructure has exploded, Taiwan’s exports, corporate revenues and government tax collections have surged.

Lai’s argument is that the benefits of this economic boom should not remain concentrated among technology companies and their employees.

The proposed cash payment is intended to distribute some of that economic windfall directly to the wider population.

Taiwan’s Economy Is Growing At An Extraordinary Pace

Taiwan’s economy grew by 14.15% during the first half of 2026.

The government has subsequently raised its forecast for full-year economic growth to 11.05%, up from an earlier estimate of 9.64%.

If achieved, that would represent Taiwan’s strongest economic expansion in nearly four decades.

The extraordinary growth is being driven largely by global demand for AI, high-performance computing and cloud infrastructure.

AI Is Driving Taiwan’s Export Boom

Taiwan sits at the centre of the global semiconductor ecosystem.

Companies based on the island manufacture advanced processors and other components required for AI systems.

The country’s manufacturers are also major producers of AI servers and related hardware.

As technology companies across the world have dramatically increased their spending on AI infrastructure, orders for Taiwanese products have surged.

The government expects merchandise exports to reach a record level this year, with technology products accounting for a substantial portion of the increase.

The Government Has Set Aside NT$235.7 Billion

The proposed cash programme would cost approximately NT$235.7 billion, equivalent to around US$7.4 billion.

The government says stronger revenues generated by the economic boom can finance the programme without requiring significant new borrowing.

That is an important part of the government’s argument.

The payment is being presented not as a debt-funded stimulus programme but as a way of returning some of the benefits of stronger economic performance to citizens.

Lai Wants Everyone To Share The AI Boom

The Taiwanese president has pointed out that not everyone is directly benefiting from the technology boom.

Taiwan’s economy includes millions of people working in services, traditional industries and small and medium-sized businesses.

Many of these workers do not necessarily see their incomes rise at the same rate as technology companies benefiting from surging AI demand.

The proposed payment is therefore intended to spread some of the gains beyond the technology sector.

People Can Decide How To Spend The Money

The government is not proposing to restrict how recipients use the money.

People could spend the cash on everyday household expenses, education, elder care or purchases from local businesses.

That could also provide a small boost to domestic consumption.

The government hopes that money flowing directly into households will circulate through the wider economy rather than remaining concentrated within the technology sector.

This Is Not Taiwan’s First ₹30,000 Cash Payment

Interestingly, Taiwan has already distributed a similar cash payment.

In 2025, the government announced a NT$10,000 payment as part of a special budget designed partly to help households deal with economic pressures including US tariffs and inflation.

The latest proposal is different in its messaging.

This time, the government is explicitly connecting the payment to Taiwan’s exceptional economic performance and the benefits generated by the AI and semiconductor boom.

The 2027 Payment Is Not Yet Guaranteed

Despite the headline, Taiwan has not yet actually handed out the new NT$10,000 payment.

The proposal is part of the planned 2027 central government budget and requires approval from Taiwan’s legislature.

That means the final amount, eligibility rules and payment mechanism could still change.

The government has indicated that if the budget is approved on schedule, the payment could potentially be distributed before the Lunar New Year in February 2027.

Who Will Be Eligible?

The proposal is being described as a payment for every citizen, but the precise eligibility rules have not yet been finalised.

Taiwan has not fully announced the mechanism that will be used to distribute the money.

The previous NT$10,000 programme also covered certain foreign permanent residents and foreign spouses of Taiwanese citizens, but it is not yet clear whether identical rules will apply to the proposed 2027 payment.

Critics Call It A Populist Move

The proposal has already attracted political criticism.

Opponents argue that President Lai’s Democratic Progressive Party had previously opposed similar cash handouts and is now supporting one.

Critics have therefore accused the government of adopting a populist policy, particularly with elections approaching.

The opposition has also pushed for an even larger payment.

The debate is likely to intensify when lawmakers begin examining the 2027 budget.

Why The “AI Dividend” Idea Is Interesting

The phrase “AI dividend” is significant because it reflects a growing global debate about who ultimately benefits from artificial intelligence.

AI is generating enormous revenues for chipmakers, cloud providers, software companies and technology firms.

But concerns are also increasing about inequality, job displacement and the concentration of wealth among companies and individuals that control AI infrastructure.

Taiwan is effectively experimenting with one possible answer: use some of the additional economic revenue generated by the AI boom to provide a direct benefit to the population.

Taiwan Has A Unique Advantage

The policy is possible partly because Taiwan occupies such an important position in the global AI supply chain.

The island is not simply consuming AI technology.

It is producing some of the most critical hardware required to build it.

Advanced semiconductor manufacturing, AI server production and related exports are generating enormous economic activity.

That gives Taiwan a much stronger fiscal and economic position from which to experiment with an “AI dividend” than many countries that are primarily consumers of AI products.

But There Is A Bigger Economic Question

A one-time payment can provide households with additional spending power.

However, it does not necessarily solve structural problems such as wage inequality, housing costs or the uneven distribution of technology-driven wealth.

Taiwan therefore faces a larger question: should the benefits of its AI boom be distributed primarily through cash payments, higher wages, stronger public services or long-term investments?

The NT$10,000 payment is only one possible answer.

The AI Boom Is Transforming Taiwan

Taiwan’s economic transformation is becoming increasingly visible.

AI has increased demand for its semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, server production and technology exports.

The country’s growth rate has accelerated dramatically, while its position in the global technology supply chain has become even more important.

The challenge for the government is ensuring that the prosperity generated by this boom reaches people outside the technology sector.

A ₹30,000 Payment Is Small Compared With The AI Windfall

For an individual citizen, ₹30,000 is a meaningful amount of money.

But compared with the enormous economic value being generated by Taiwan’s technology sector, the payment represents only a fraction of the broader AI-driven windfall.

The government’s strategy is therefore less about permanently redistributing technology profits and more about giving citizens a direct and visible share of the current economic surplus.

Could Other Countries Follow Taiwan?

Taiwan’s experiment could attract attention well beyond the island.

Governments around the world are trying to determine how societies should benefit from AI-driven productivity gains.

If AI increasingly becomes responsible for a larger share of economic growth, governments could eventually explore mechanisms ranging from tax reforms and universal basic income to direct cash dividends.

Taiwan’s proposed payment provides an early example of how a government can frame such redistribution.

The Bigger Message Is About Who Owns The AI Boom

Taiwan’s semiconductor industry has become one of the most important beneficiaries of the AI revolution.

But the government is now making a broader argument: the economic rewards generated by that revolution should not belong only to companies and investors.

By calling the payment an “AI dividend”, President Lai is effectively saying that citizens should receive a share of the country’s technology-driven prosperity.

Whether that approach becomes a long-term policy or remains a one-time payout will depend on Taiwan’s future economic performance and political decisions.

Taiwan Is Turning AI Growth Into A Citizen Dividend

If approved, every eligible recipient could receive NT$10,000, roughly ₹30,000, sometime before Lunar New Year 2027.

The payment would be funded from stronger government revenues generated during a period of exceptional economic growth.

For Taiwan, it represents more than a cash handout.

It is an experiment in turning the enormous economic gains generated by AI, semiconductors and high-performance computing into a benefit that ordinary citizens can directly see and use.

Summary

Taiwan is proposing a NT$10,000 cash payment, worth roughly ₹30,000, to every citizen next year as the economy benefits from the global AI and semiconductor boom. President Lai Ching-te has called the payment an “AI dividend”, saying ordinary people should share in the technology-driven economic gains. Taiwan’s economy grew 14.15% in the first half of 2026, while the government has raised its full-year growth forecast to 11.05%. The proposed programme would cost around NT$235.7 billion, or US$7.4 billion, and the government expects higher revenues to fund it without significant new borrowing. The proposal still needs legislative approval, and final eligibility and payment details have not yet been confirmed.

President Calls It An “AI Dividend” Taiwan is planning to give every citizen NT$10,000, or roughly ₹30,000, next year as the island’s economy benefits from the global boom in artificial intelligence, semiconductors and high-performance computing.
