A former Deloitte IT manager in Hong Kong has admitted stealing 423 company laptops<\/strong> over a period of 17 months and selling them to fund his personal stock market trading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The man, identified as Ho Man-kit, 40<\/strong>, admitted taking Lenovo laptops belonging to Deloitte and selling them to a recycler. The case has drawn attention because hundreds of company-owned devices were allegedly converted into cash for speculative trading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Laptops Worth \u20b91.45 Crore<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The stolen laptops were reportedly worth around HK$1.2 million, or approximately \u20b91.45 crore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The thefts took place between September 2021 and February 2023<\/strong>, while Ho was working in Deloitte’s IT department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to investigators, the money generated from selling the laptops was used for personal stock market investments. However, instead of recovering his financial losses, Ho ultimately lost the money through unsuccessful trading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u20b955 Lakh From Laptop Sales<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Court records showed that Ho received more than HK$458,000, around \u20b955 lakh<\/strong>, from the sale of the laptops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Investigators alleged that these proceeds were funnelled into stock market trading and stock options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The trading activity did not produce the desired results. Ho reportedly lost the money and remained in debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The difference between the total value of the laptops and the proceeds received from their sale suggests that the devices were sold for substantially less than their original value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Missing Laptops Exposed The Theft<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The large-scale theft came to light after an IT engineer discovered that the company was short of hundreds of laptops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An initial check reportedly found that 399 laptops were missing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The investigation subsequently uncovered the much larger number of devices allegedly removed and sold by Ho.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The case highlights the challenges companies can face in tracking large inventories of IT equipment, particularly when employees have access to technology assets as part of their jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Former Manager Faces Court Proceedings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Ho appeared before a Hong Kong court and has been remanded in custody pending sentencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He admitted to one count of theft involving the laptops.
