Every Third Fuel Outlet To Offer Alternative Fuel<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government has mandated that at least every third retail fuel outlet must offer a new-generation alternative fuel within the next three years.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move is aimed at accelerating the availability of cleaner energy options across India’s fuel retail network and reducing dependence on conventional petrol and diesel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The alternative fuel facilities can include CNG, LNG, biofuels, electric vehicle charging and battery-swapping facilities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fuel Stations Get Three Years To Comply<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the new requirement, fuel marketing entities will have to ensure that at least one out of every three retail outlets under their network offers one of the specified alternative fuel options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The policy is intended to make cleaner fuels more accessible to consumers by ensuring that alternative energy infrastructure is not concentrated only in select cities or locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, the government wants these options to become a regular feature of India’s fuel retail network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Existing Outlets Must Report Their Status<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Retail outlets commissioned between November 8, 2019 and August 10, 2026<\/strong> will have to provide details of their operations and alternative fuel facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fuel marketing companies will need to report the number of outlets commissioned and those that have been operational for more than three years. They will also have to identify outlets that already offer alternative fuels and report any shortfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The required information has to be submitted within one month<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six Months To Fix The Shortfall<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After identifying gaps, fuel retailers will have six months<\/strong> to meet the prescribed requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Failure to comply could result in a penalty of up to \u20b910 lakh per outlet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The financial penalty is designed to push fuel retailers to move quickly rather than simply report their existing infrastructure without making additional investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNG, LNG, Biofuel And EV Charging Included<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The policy provides fuel retailers with multiple options for meeting the requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can install facilities for CNG, LNG, biofuels, EV charging or battery swapping<\/strong>, depending on the requirements and feasibility of individual locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This gives companies flexibility while simultaneously expanding the overall availability of cleaner transportation fuels and electric mobility infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Fuel Retailers Also Face Targets<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government has also introduced requirements for new retail operators entering the fuel market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New retailers will need to establish at least 100 outlets within five years<\/strong>, with some of these outlets required to be located in remote areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The requirement is intended to ensure that the expansion of fuel retail infrastructure also contributes to wider access to alternative fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Push For Cleaner Mobility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The policy comes as India attempts to diversify its transportation energy mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Electric vehicles are expanding rapidly, while CNG, LNG and biofuels are also being promoted as alternatives to conventional fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By requiring alternative fuel infrastructure at a significant share of fuel outlets, the government is effectively using the country’s existing fuel retail network to accelerate the transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For consumers, the biggest impact could be greater availability of charging, CNG, LNG and other alternative fuel options along commonly used routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
