Nearly 10% Vehicles Trigger E-Notices<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

India’s new barrier-less tolling system is already seeing a significant number of vehicles cross toll plazas without successfully paying the required user fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Data from five Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll plazas shows that 10.52 lakh e-notices<\/strong> <\/a>were issued between May and July out of 1.10 crore vehicle crossings<\/strong>. That means roughly 1 in every 10 vehicles<\/strong> was flagged for non-payment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The notices are issued when vehicles have an insufficient FASTag balance or when the FASTag is invalid or non-functional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choryasi Records Highest Violation Rate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the five toll plazas analysed, Choryasi in Gujarat<\/strong> recorded the highest violation rate at 11.97%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was followed by Mundaka in Delhi at 10.93%<\/strong>, Manoharpura in Rajasthan at 8.17%<\/strong>, Gharaunda in Haryana at 5.54%<\/strong> and Daulatpura in Rajasthan at 5.07%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In absolute numbers, however, Mundaka recorded the highest number of e-notices, with 4.54 lakh<\/strong> notices issued between May and July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choryasi followed with around 3.70 lakh e-notices<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FASTag Violations Are Falling<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The data also suggests that motorists are gradually adapting to the new barrier-less system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Choryasi, India’s first MLFF toll plaza, the violation rate fell from 15.33% in May to 9.73% in July<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May, around 1.69 lakh e-notices were issued against 11.04 lakh vehicles. In June, the number dropped to 1.09 lakh notices against 10.49 lakh crossings, while July recorded 91,240 notices against 9.38 lakh vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mundaka also recorded a smaller decline, with its violation rate falling from 11.41% in May to 10.59% in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cars Account For 91% Of Violations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cars and jeeps are by far the biggest category involved in FASTag violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the 10.52 lakh e-notices issued across the five toll plazas, around 9.62 lakh were issued to cars<\/strong>, accounting for more than 91% of all notices<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The violation rate for cars also improved, falling from around 15% in May to 9.9% in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks accounted for 3.5% of notices, while light commercial vehicles represented 2.5%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only 40% Of E-Notice Money Recovered<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Issuing an e-notice does not automatically mean the toll has been recovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 40% of the total amount linked to e-notices has been realised<\/strong> so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collection performance varies considerably between toll plazas. Choryasi has recorded the highest recovery at more than 60%, while Mundaka has recovered only around 20%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the MLFF system, motorists receive an e-notice for non-payment and are required to settle the amount within 72 hours<\/strong>. Failure to pay within that period results in the toll amount being doubled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barrier-Less Tolling To Expand Across India<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government is pushing MLFF technology to eliminate the need for vehicles to stop at toll plazas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The system is expected to reduce congestion, save travel time, improve fuel efficiency and reduce vehicle emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Economic Survey 2025-26, the government plans to implement MLFF across all four-lane and wider national highways and expressways by March 2029<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tolling implementation agency has already awarded contracts for 12 additional fee plazas<\/strong>, while bids have been invited for another 104 plazas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FASTag Becomes Even More Important<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As India moves towards a completely barrier-less tolling network, maintaining a valid and adequately funded FASTag will become increasingly important for motorists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike traditional toll plazas, MLFF systems allow vehicles to pass without stopping. This makes the system faster, but it also means that payment failures are automatically detected through technology and converted into e-notices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the government planning a rapid expansion of MLFF, the current 9.53% violation rate provides an early indication of the compliance challenge that needs to be addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summary<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly 1 in 10 vehicles crossing five barrier-less toll plazas triggered an e-notice for toll non-payment between May and July. A total of 10.52 lakh notices were issued against 1.10 crore crossings, with Choryasi recording the highest violation rate at 11.97%. Cars accounted for more than 91% of notices.
