According to the Ministry of Finance, 6,00,868 out of 6,01,328 inhabited villages<\/strong> are now served through a bank branch, Business Correspondent (BC), or India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) outlet. The milestone reflects the country’s sustained efforts to improve financial inclusion and expand formal banking services to rural and remote areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extensive Banking Network Supports Financial Inclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The achievement has been made possible through a vast banking infrastructure spread across the country. As of July 17, 2026<\/strong>, India had more than 1.81 lakh bank branches<\/strong>, 17.36 lakh Business Correspondents<\/strong>, and 1.65 lakh India Post Payments Bank centres<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together, these channels have significantly improved access to banking services, ensuring that people in remote locations can access savings accounts, credit, insurance, pensions, and other financial products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jan Dhan Continues To Drive Banking Access<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) remains one of the biggest contributors to financial inclusion. As of July 17, 2026<\/strong>, the country had 58.77 crore Jan Dhan accounts<\/strong>, reflecting the continued expansion of formal banking among previously unbanked citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government’s Jan Dhan Darshak (JDD) App has also played a key role in monitoring banking coverage and identifying areas that require additional banking infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strengthening The Digital Financial Ecosystem<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond physical banking access, India has witnessed rapid growth in digital financial services through Business Correspondents, India Post Payments Bank, and digital payment platforms. The expanded banking network is expected to improve access to government welfare schemes, direct benefit transfers, digital payments, and formal credit across rural India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The near-universal coverage also strengthens the country’s financial infrastructure by bringing more citizens into the formal banking system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
