Under the proposal, several leaders currently using Mahindra Scorpio-N SUVs<\/strong> will receive new Toyota Innova Crysta<\/strong> vehicles, with civic officials citing improved comfort and practicality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the proposal, the upgraded vehicles will be allotted to the Leader of the House<\/strong>, the Leader of the Opposition<\/strong>, and the chairpersons of BMC’s statutory committees<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move comes shortly after Deputy Mayor Sanjay Ghadi<\/strong> had sought official accommodation closer to the BMC headquarters, citing long travel time from Dahisar to South Mumbai due to heavy traffic. Although that request was not accepted, the civic administration has now proposed upgrading the official vehicle fleet used by senior elected representatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Is BMC Switching To Innova Crysta?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials believe the Toyota Innova Crysta<\/strong> offers greater passenger comfort, better ride quality and improved space compared to the Scorpio-N, particularly for leaders who spend several hours travelling across Mumbai for official work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Innova Crysta is also widely used by government departments across India because of its reliability, spacious cabin and lower maintenance requirements during long-term official use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal is expected to be placed before the Municipal Commissioner for approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proposal Worth Around \u20b91.5 Crore<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The total estimated cost of the vehicle upgrade is around \u20b91.5 crore<\/strong>, covering the replacement of vehicles allocated to six senior civic office-bearers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If approved, the procurement will form part of BMC’s broader effort to modernise its official transport fleet. Earlier this year, the civic body had also undertaken fleet upgrades for elected representatives and senior officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public Debate Over Spending Priorities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal has sparked discussions about whether such expenditure should be prioritised when Mumbai continues to face several civic challenges, including road maintenance, monsoon-related flooding and infrastructure improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supporters argue that senior elected representatives require reliable and comfortable transportation to efficiently discharge official responsibilities across India’s financial capital. Critics, however, question whether public funds should be used for premium vehicle upgrades at a time when other civic projects require substantial investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
