The move is expected to make travel, tourism and cross-border trade much more convenient for people travelling between the two neighbouring nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"962\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-29-at-9.16.18-AM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1312297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-29-at-9.16.18-AM.png 962w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-29-at-9.16.18-AM-300x205.png 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-29-at-9.16.18-AM-768x525.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 962px) 100vw, 962px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The revised regulations have been issued by the <strong>Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB)<\/strong> and are aimed at simplifying the movement of Indian currency while retaining safeguards against misuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What Has Changed?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the new rules, Indian and Nepali nationals can now carry <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newindianexpress.com\/india\/2026\/Jul\/26\/nepal-relaxes-post-demonetisation-rules-on-indian-currency-permits-rs-200-and-rs-500-notes\">Indian currency notes of \u20b9200 and \u20b9500 denominations<\/a><\/strong>, provided the notes were <strong>issued on or after November 9, 2016<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total value of Indian currency that can be carried remains capped at <strong>\u20b925,000 per person<\/strong>. The relaxation applies to both entering and leaving Nepal, making travel significantly easier for visitors who previously had to rely mainly on \u20b9100 notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why Were These Notes Earlier Restricted?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following India&#8217;s demonetisation on <strong>November 8, 2016<\/strong>, Nepal imposed restrictions on Indian currency notes above the \u20b9100 denomination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although India later introduced redesigned \u20b9500 notes and new \u20b9200 notes, Nepal continued to permit only \u20b9100 notes for several years due to regulatory and implementation issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest notification officially removes this long-standing restriction for the newer currency notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Old \u20b9500 And \u20b91,000 Notes Still Not Allowed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The relaxation does <strong>not<\/strong> apply to old Indian currency notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the NRB, <strong>\u20b9500 and \u20b91,000 notes issued before November 9, 2016<\/strong>, remain prohibited in Nepal. Only the redesigned \u20b9500 notes and the newer \u20b9200 notes issued after demonetisation are permitted under the revised regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u20b925,000 limit on carrying Indian currency also remains unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Other Important Rules Travellers Should Know<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The revised regulations continue to impose certain restrictions on the movement of Indian currency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nepali citizens are permitted to bring Indian currency into Nepal <strong>only from India<\/strong>. Similarly, they cannot carry Indian currency from Nepal to any third country other than India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from Indian currency, Nepali citizens and foreign travellers may carry up to <strong>US$5,000<\/strong>, or its equivalent in other foreign currencies, without making a customs declaration. Amounts exceeding this limit must be declared at customs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Boost For Tourism And Trade<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The policy change is expected to benefit thousands of Indian tourists visiting Nepal every year, as well as Nepali citizens engaged in trade, business and employment in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With India being Nepal&#8217;s largest trading partner and one of its biggest sources of tourists, the easing of currency rules is likely to simplify cross-border transactions and improve convenience for travellers on both sides of the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nepal has allowed Indian and Nepali citizens to carry post-November 9, 2016 \u20b9200 and \u20b9500 Indian currency notes up to a limit of \u20b925,000 per person.
