The latest figures, shared by the Finance Ministry in Parliament, highlight the growing number of high-income earners as the country’s economy continues to expand.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of taxpayers declaring an annual gross income of at least \u20b9100 crore<\/strong> has increased fourfold since AY 2021-22<\/strong>, when only 142<\/strong> individuals reported income in this category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Compared to the previous assessment year, the latest figures represent an increase of 161 taxpayers<\/strong>, or nearly 39%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Government Clarifies Definition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    While responding to a question in the Lok Sabha, the Ministry of Finance clarified that there is no statutory definition<\/strong> of the term “billionaire” under either the Income-tax Act, 2025<\/strong> or the earlier Income-tax Act, 1961<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Instead, the figures are based on taxpayers who declared a gross total income of \u20b9100 crore or more<\/strong> in their income tax returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    According to official data cited in Parliament, the unemployment rate<\/strong> for people aged 15 years and above<\/strong> declined from 3.6% in 2022<\/strong> to 3.1% in 2025<\/strong>. The government also pointed to investments in food security, healthcare, education, housing and social welfare as part of its broader strategy to support balanced economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
