UPI May Soon Work Without Internet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is reportedly developing a new offline UPI payment feature that will allow users to make transactions even without an internet connection. The technology is designed to enable digital payments in places where connectivity is unavailable or unreliable, such as flights, underground metro systems, tunnels, and remote locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move is expected to further strengthen India’s digital payments ecosystem by making UPI more reliable in offline environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tap-To-Pay Using NFC Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upcoming feature will leverage Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. Users with NFC-enabled smartphones will simply tap their device on a compatible point-of-sale (PoS) terminal to complete a payment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike conventional UPI transactions, the payment will not require an active internet connection at the time of purchase, making the process faster and more convenient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Offline Payments Up To Rs 2,000<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed system is expected to support offline payments of up to Rs 2,000. Before using the service, customers will need to load money into their UPI Lite wallet while connected to the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the wallet is funded, users can continue making offline transactions until the available balance is exhausted, after which it can be reloaded online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designed For Travel And Low-Connectivity Areas<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The feature is expected to be especially useful during flights, underground metro journeys, and in locations where mobile networks are weak or unavailable. It will allow passengers and commuters to continue making digital payments without worrying about connectivity issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative also has the potential to improve payment acceptance in remote regions where internet access remains inconsistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NPCI Preparing Ecosystem Rollout<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NPCI is expected to certify compatible offline payment terminals before banks and payment service providers introduce the feature within their UPI applications. Once implemented, the technology could significantly expand the reach of digital payments and reduce dependence on cash in offline environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development reflects NPCI’s continued efforts to make UPI more versatile and accessible across different usage scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
