Indian Railways is set to achieve a major milestone in green transportation with the launch of the country’s first hydrogen-powered train. India’s Green Rail Revolution Begins<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The hydrogen-powered train will operate on the 89-kilometre Jind-Sonipat section under Northern Railway. It has undergone extensive testing over the past few months between Jind, Sonipat and New Delhi before receiving approval for commercial operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike conventional diesel trains, the new train uses hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity, emitting only water vapour as a by-product. This makes it a zero-emission alternative that can significantly reduce the environmental impact of rail transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Route, Speed And Passenger Capacity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The train will consist of two driving power cars and eight passenger coaches. It has a maximum operating speed of 110 kmph, although trials have been conducted at speeds ranging between 75 kmph and 120 kmph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indian Railways plans to operate two round trips every day, covering approximately 356 kilometres daily. The train offers 682 seats and can accommodate around 2,600 passengers, making it suitable for both regular commuters and regional travellers. Maintenance of the train will be carried out at Delhi, while a dedicated hydrogen production and refuelling facility has been established at Jind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Major Step Towards Sustainable Transport<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hydrogen fuel-cell technology is considered one of the most promising alternatives to fossil fuels for rail transport, particularly on routes that are not fully electrified. By adopting hydrogen-powered trains, Indian Railways aims to reduce carbon emissions while supporting the country’s clean energy goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The launch also demonstrates India’s growing focus on indigenous green technologies and modern railway infrastructure. If the pilot project proves successful, hydrogen-powered trains could eventually be introduced on more routes across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
