Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday flagged off the new Pune-Sainagar Shirdi Express, marking the launch of the first direct rail service between Pune and one of Maharashtra’s most important pilgrimage destinations. Alongside the launch, the minister announced that a series of ongoing railway infrastructure projects could double Pune’s rail handling capacity within the next three to three-and-a-half years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development is being viewed as a major boost for both passenger connectivity and regional economic growth, especially as Pune continues to expand as an educational, IT, manufacturing, and transportation hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Direct Train Between Pune and Shirdi<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Pune-Sainagar Shirdi Express fulfils a long-standing demand from devotees and travellers seeking direct rail connectivity to the Sai Baba temple town. Until now, passengers often had to rely on connecting trains or road transport to reach Shirdi from Pune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The daily train service is expected to benefit pilgrims, senior citizens, families, students, and business travellers. Railway officials believe it will also strengthen religious tourism and improve access to educational and healthcare facilities in Pune for residents of Ahilyyanagar and surrounding regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The train will halt at Daund Cord Cabin, Shrigonda, Ahilyanagar, Rahuri, and Belapur, improving connectivity for several towns along the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pune Rail Network Set for Major Expansion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

During the launch event, Vaishnaw highlighted multiple railway projects underway across Pune, including upgrades at Hadapsar, Shivajinagar, Khadki, Uruli, and Alandi. These projects are aimed at addressing increasing passenger demand and improving operational efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the minister, the modernization of Pune Junction, construction of additional platforms, development of a mega coaching terminal at Akurdi, and deployment of advanced digital signalling systems will significantly expand rail capacity in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once completed, these upgrades are expected to enable the operation of nearly 20 additional trains, effectively doubling Pune’s rail network capacity over the next few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bullet Train Projects Also Mentioned<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Vaishnaw also referred to several future high-speed rail initiatives, including the proposed Mumbai-Pune and Pune-Hyderabad bullet train corridors. Along with the Mumbai-Pune third and fourth railway lines, these projects are expected to strengthen Maharashtra’s transportation infrastructure and support economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister noted that the Centre has allocated approximately \u20b923,900 crore for railway projects across Maharashtra. He added that redevelopment work has already been completed at 93 of the 129 railway stations identified for modernization in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boost for Tourism and Local Economy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The new Pune-Shirdi service is expected to generate economic benefits beyond passenger convenience. Increased tourist traffic to Shirdi could support hotels, restaurants, transport operators, local vendors, and other businesses dependent on pilgrimage tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Railway officials also believe the train will improve mobility for farmers, traders, students, and professionals living in towns along the route, helping strengthen regional commerce and connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Significant Step for Maharashtra Railways<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The launch of the Pune-Shirdi Express represents more than just a new train service. Combined with large-scale infrastructure upgrades planned across Pune, it signals a broader effort to modernize Maharashtra’s railway network and accommodate future growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
