According to a survey conducted by LocalCircles, involving over 24,000 vehicle owners, around 50% of respondents reported a reduction in fuel efficiency over the past nine months following the widespread adoption of E20 petrol. Some respondents claimed mileage losses of up to 20%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The survey also found that among owners of vehicles purchased before 2022, nearly 29% reported unusual wear and tear or increased repair requirements involving engines, fuel lines, tanks, carburettors, and related components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many respondents argued that their real-world experience differs significantly from official estimates, which suggested fuel efficiency would decline by only 1% to 6% with E20 fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Ethanol Can Affect Mileage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Ethanol contains less energy per litre than conventional petrol. As a result, vehicles may need to burn more fuel to generate the same power output, leading to lower mileage. Experts note that older vehicles originally designed for E5 or E10 fuel blends may be more susceptible to the effects of higher ethanol content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Policymakers view ethanol as a critical tool for reducing crude oil imports, lowering emissions, and supporting farmers through increased demand for sugarcane and grain-based ethanol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has repeatedly maintained that E20 fuel has only a marginal impact on mileage and does not pose significant risks to vehicle safety or insurance coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
