In a landmark move towards green transportation, Indian Railways has approved the country\u2019s first indigenous hydrogen fuel cell-powered train for operations on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. The ambitious project marks a major milestone in India\u2019s clean energy and sustainable mobility mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India Enters The Hydrogen Rail Era<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The newly approved hydrogen-powered train will operate on the Northern Railway\u2019s Jind-Sonipat section, covering nearly 90 kilometers in Haryana. According to the Ministry of Railways, the 10-coach trainset is expected to begin operations soon and will run at a maximum speed of 75 kmph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The train is powered by a 1200 KW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system that generates electricity through a chemical reaction using hydrogen. Unlike diesel engines, the system emits only water vapour, making it a zero-emission transport solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Makes This Train Special?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This hydrogen train has been indigenously designed and developed as part of India\u2019s broader push towards self-reliance and green mobility. Reports suggest it could become one of the world\u2019s longest and most powerful hydrogen-powered broad-gauge trainsets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project includes a dedicated hydrogen storage and refuelling facility at Jind. Indian Railways has also installed advanced safety systems such as hydrogen leak detectors, flame detectors, standby compressors, and continuous monitoring infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials have reportedly deployed trained technical staff for the initial operational phase to ensure safety and monitor the train\u2019s performance closely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Big Push Towards Green Transportation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hydrogen-powered trains are increasingly being viewed as the future of clean railway transport worldwide. Countries like Germany, Japan, China, and the United States are already experimenting with or operating hydrogen-based rail systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this approval, India joins an elite group of nations exploring hydrogen fuel technology for railways. The initiative aligns with India\u2019s long-term net-zero carbon emission goals and the Railways\u2019 broader strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Future Of Hydrogen Trains In India<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Jind-Sonipat corridor has been selected as the pilot route, but experts believe hydrogen-powered trains could eventually expand to several non-electrified and heritage railway routes across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indian Railways has already prepared detailed operation and maintenance manuals through the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). Continuous audits, standard operating procedures, and safety checks are also being implemented before large-scale deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The successful rollout of this project could significantly transform India\u2019s railway ecosystem while strengthening the country\u2019s position in next-generation clean transportation technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
