Japan\u2019s Hitachi Rail and Toshiba have officially unveiled Taiwan\u2019s next-generation high-speed train, based on the advanced N700S Shinkansen platform. The newly unveiled train is derived from Japan\u2019s famous N700S Shinkansen, one of the world\u2019s most advanced high-speed train platforms. Taiwan had placed an order for 12 trainsets comprising 144 cars through the Hitachi Toshiba Supreme Consortium in a deal valued at around 124 billion yen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trains are designed to operate at speeds of up to 300 km\/h and will run on the Taipei-to-Kaohsiung high-speed corridor. The project marks another major collaboration between Japan and Taiwan in railway technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taiwan High Speed Rail says the new trains will boost peak travel capacity by nearly 25%, helping the network manage growing passenger demand. The operator has seen strong ridership growth in recent years, with daily passenger traffic crossing 200,000 travelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The N700ST trains feature redesigned interiors, quieter cabins, and improved seating comfort. Reports also mention smaller windows compared to current trains, helping reduce outside noise levels during high-speed operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advanced Energy-Efficient Technology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the biggest highlights of the train is its energy-efficient design. The N700ST uses a compact traction system featuring silicon carbide (SiC) devices and a blower-less cooling system to improve efficiency and reduce power consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The train will also include lithium-ion battery systems that can power the train at low speeds during emergencies or power outages, improving operational safety and reliability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delivery And Launch Timeline<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The first N700ST trainset is expected to arrive in Taiwan in August 2026 for testing and inspections. Commercial passenger operations are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
