Neeraj Mittal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India has maintained 60-day crude and fuel reserves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LPG reserves exceed 45 days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Additional fuel procurement has been secured from alternative countries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Domestic LPG production has increased sharply<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why India Is Worried About Energy Security<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>India is among the world\u2019s most energy-dependent economies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nearly 88% of crude oil demand is met through imports<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Around one-fifth of global oil trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any Middle East disruption directly impacts India\u2019s economy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The government has been operating in what officials described as a \u201ccrisis-management mode\u201d for over two months to ensure uninterrupted fuel supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, despite crude oil prices remaining extremely high globally, India has avoided major petrol and diesel price hikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this stability is proving expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to government estimates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Oil marketing companies are absorbing nearly \u20b91,000 crore losses every day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under-recoveries may touch almost \u20b92 lakh crore in Q1 FY26 alone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is \u2018Samudra Manthan\u2019?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside short-term fuel management, India is accelerating a much larger long-term energy security strategy called \u201cSamudra Manthan.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme focuses on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Deep-sea oil and gas exploration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offshore critical mineral discovery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expanding domestic energy production<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reducing dependence on imported crude<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials say the project is now in its final stages before rollout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative is expected to become one of India\u2019s biggest offshore exploration drives ever, targeting untapped reserves beneath Indian waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">India Wants Bigger Strategic Reserves<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>India currently has strategic petroleum reserves in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visakhapatnam<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mangaluru<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Padur<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But the government now plans to expand reserve capacities further for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Crude oil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Natural gas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LPG<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The long-term goal is reportedly to move closer toward a 90-day strategic reserve target similar to International Energy Agency (IEA) recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, officials admit this is financially challenging for a country consuming nearly 5 million barrels of oil per day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PM Modi\u2019s Fuel Conservation Push<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The government has also launched a nationwide fuel conservation appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently urged citizens to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use public transport and metros<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prefer
