Under the National Highways Authority of India\u2019s (NHAI) new Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system, motorists who fail to clear toll dues within 72 hours may be charged double the toll amount as penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"669\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-12-at-8.49.49-AM-1024x669.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1309385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-12-at-8.49.49-AM-1024x669.png 1024w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-12-at-8.49.49-AM-300x196.png 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-12-at-8.49.49-AM-768x502.png 768w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-12-at-8.49.49-AM.png 1286w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The move is part of India\u2019s ambitious plan to remove traditional toll booths and create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/auto\/double-charges-for-missing-payment-within-72-hours-at-barrier-less-tolls-11451429\">uninterrupted<\/a> highway travel using FASTag and AI-powered camera systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How The New Barrier-Less Toll System Works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike conventional toll plazas where vehicles stop at barriers, the MLFF system allows vehicles to drive through at normal highway speeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The system uses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>FASTag-based electronic toll collection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI-enabled vehicle detection systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overhead gantries instead of physical booths<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As vehicles pass through, cameras identify the registration number while FASTag scanners automatically deduct toll charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India has already started deploying the system at select locations including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Surat-Bharuch stretch on NH-48 in Gujarat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Delhi-NCR\u2019s Urban Extension Road-II corridor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happens If FASTag Payment Fails?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If the FASTag account has insufficient balance, is inactive, or payment fails for any reason, the system generates an electronic notice (e-notice) to the vehicle owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Motorists then get a 72-hour window to clear the toll dues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If payment is not completed within that period:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Double toll charges may apply<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FASTag services can be suspended<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeated violations may trigger stricter penalties<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to reports, authorities may even link violations with the VAHAN vehicle database for enforcement actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Govt Says MLFF Can Save Thousands Of Crores<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The government believes the barrier-less tolling model can dramatically improve highway efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari reportedly said the new system could help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Save nearly \u20b97,000 crore annually<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduce fuel wastage worth \u20b9285 crore<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cut congestion at toll plazas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower carbon emissions significantly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At the Surat MLFF corridor alone, around 41,500 vehicles reportedly crossed on the first operational day without stopping at toll barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why This Changes Highway Travel In India<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>India currently has over 1,300 toll plazas across national highways.
