India\u2019s massive work-from-home experiment may not be over yet. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens<\/a> and businesses to conserve fuel and revive Covid-era remote work practices amid global energy concerns, India\u2019s IT employees\u2019 union NITES has formally requested<\/a> the government to support mandatory work-from-home wherever feasible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) wrote to Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya asking for an official advisory for the IT and IT-enabled services sector. The union argues that large-scale remote working can significantly reduce fuel consumption, traffic congestion, pollution, and employee stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why WFH Is Suddenly Back In Discussion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The renewed push comes amid growing geopolitical tensions in West Asia and fears of rising crude oil prices. India imports more than 85% of its crude oil requirements, making fuel conservation a major economic concern during global disruptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a recent public address, PM Modi reportedly advised companies to consider restarting work-from-home practices to reduce unnecessary travel and fuel usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IT sector quickly responded. NITES stated that India\u2019s IT industry had already proven during the Covid-19 pandemic that remote work can function effectively at scale without major productivity losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India Already Ran One Of The World\u2019s Biggest WFH Experiments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

India\u2019s organised sectors witnessed one of the world\u2019s largest remote-work transitions during the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to industry estimates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Remote work in IT and digital industries jumped from below 5% pre-Covid to nearly 70% at its peak<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • India\u2019s IT sector employs around 5.8 million professionals<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Millions of daily office commutes disappeared almost overnight<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity tools, digital collaboration platforms, and hybrid management systems became mainstream during that period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Experts now say the technology infrastructure already exists. The bigger challenge is managerial mindset and corporate culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Companies Are Open \u2014 But Cautious<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Several corporates have reportedly indicated openness toward flexible or hybrid work arrangements. However, many businesses remain hesitant about fully remote models because of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Collaboration challenges<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Employee monitoring concerns<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Cybersecurity risks<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Reduced face-to-face innovation<\/li>\n\n\n\n

      Industries like IT, consulting, fintech, media, and Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are considered the most capable of sustaining hybrid work models because much of their operations are already digitally managed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      However, manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and hospitality sectors still require strong physical workplace presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      More Than Just Fuel Savings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      The debate is no longer only about convenience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Supporters of work-from-home say remote work can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Reduce fuel imports and traffic congestion<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Lower carbon emissions<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Improve employee well-being<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Save commuting time and costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Expand hiring beyond metro cities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        At the same time, critics argue that excessive remote work may weaken innovation, collaboration, mentorship, and workplace culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
